Another scooper has sent in their review of Artificial Intelligence. This one from Jack Arnold, "The only scoop on this movie is that it's an incredible disappointment, thin plot, plodding action, all provide a flimsy excuse for Dreamworks to play with their expensive special effects. A waste of some good talent, to boot. Let's remember Osment for his great role in "Sixth Sense", instead of this yawner".

We've also posted a full review of Artificial Intelligence too. So, go and see what Tim Twelves thought of it!

One of our very own scoopers sent in a review of a test screening that they attended over in Kumamoto, Japan. It's not good i'm affraid, take it away H.E.

"With all due respect to S. Spielberg, I think he's produced an often
visually stunning...turkey.
After 2 hours I was squirming in my seat waiting and waiting for it to end.
Over 2000 years of time is covered in the movie and it feels like it. Sorry to say, but it's a bore. As for Stanley Kubrick's contribution to the film, I could sarcastically say--rigor mortis. But the lighting and sets are an homage to him I suppose. I don't think he'd want to claim much else. I'm certainly not going to pay to see it again even in video. It needs some righteous editing and cutting to make it more palatable. Hope I haven't offended anyone, and I'm glad Steven S. has royalties coming in for his other past and fine efforts. I think AI will ultimately bomb." Thanks to H.E. Hodgson.

Jude Law’s lips but to no avail. However, Premiere magazine seem to have caught the British actor on a surprisingly good day because he let slip more than a few words about his time working on Spielberg’s sci-fi spectacular.“it’s not a prediction of what’s to come in the future – Kubrick was very clear about that,” said Law. “He always called it a future fairy tale.” Law plays an android, or Mecha, in a world where these mechanical slaves are used for a range of tasks. Law himself is a love Mecha, going by the apt name of Gigolo Joe. “He’s very good at his job,” says Law of his character who exists only to ‘pleasure’ his human clients. While most of his scenes took place against a blue screen, Law did get to work alongside some weird and wonderful robots, “They were so real, so funny, so amazing. I had to match them. You realise the oddity of working in films. Bottom line is, you’re shooting a scene; it doesn’t matter who you’re opposite: him, her, that. It’s all relevant. It’s all believing, isn’t it?”The development of Gigolo Joe, Law describes as similar to building a robot, “When we started, I kept picturing this geek in a workshop, building me. What would he have put in me? What could I do or not do? Then I realised I was the geek. I was the guy building me, programming my brain, deciding how emotional, how expressive he could be. Steven would say, ‘Go for it, make him as human as you want. Let me remind you of the rules if you go too far.’”As to the look of his character, that was one aspect that was out of Law’s hands, seeing him spend three hours a day in make-up. “It’s a very simple effect,” he said, “but not one that’s ever been used before. I look like rubber, like I’m spray-painted. But you can always see me, and I can do everything. I’m not Max Headroom.”Law drew the line at revealing any of the film’s plot points but did share his thoughts on the meaning of the film. “The message, perhaps, is that if we do create artificial life, we will be responsible for them, we will be their gods. We will choose what they have, what they’re good at. But the one thing we can’t program is love. Love is untranslatable.”

Aint It Cool were first with this one. There have been airings of the AI TV commercial over in the US and they have digitised it. Over at their site you can see stills grabbed from the TV Spot or download the thing in full (.mov file). So get yourself to AICN by clicking here.

According to Premiere magazine AI is too include dance numbers. Oh yeah! Coming Soon posted this; For research, Law soaked up Fred Astaire musicals, studied Ray Bolgers' moves, listened to Frank Sinatra records. He watched James Cagney's performance in 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' over and over.

Steven Spielberg has also been talking to the LA Times about the movie and when asked if the movie's plot resembled that of Pinnochio, he replied; "Pinocchio is a catalyst for the beginning of an odyssey, a journey into the future. But it's not the movie."

Regarding the Cloudmakers story I posted yesterday (see below). I've now found a few sites that may be of interest. They're mainly fan sites dedicated to the weird but pure genious marketing ploy for the AI movie. Check them out.

I hadn't commented on this before as I wanted to try and find out just what it was all about. For those who don't know, here's what i'm talking about. A few weeks back the latest AI trailer appeared online (exclusively) and in with the credits that appear at the end of the trailer was a listing for 'Sentient Machine Therapist' alongside your usual producer and director credits. Alongside the credit is the name Jeanine Salla. Now some bright spark typed the name into the Google
search engine and her own web site turns up at www.jeaninesalla.com. At the site she talks about her work with artificial intelligence and names one of her friends, Evan Chan. Nothing strange about that, only she lives a couple of centuries into the future. Have a look at the site and see what I mean. Also, take a look at www.familychan.org, which is her friend's own site. It reveals that her friend Evan Chan died in an accident on his yacht, Cloudmaker. There are loads of sites listed but not one mentions the AI movie. Here's another weird
coincidence. At the end of the same trailer for AI, there is the words SUMMER and 2001 made up of a lot of notches. Apparentley and i'm only going off what I have read over the last couple of days is that if you count the notches on each letter, it will give you a valid US telephone number that, when dialed has a message that ends with a mention of Jeanine Sallas website, but no incling of a tie with the movie. WHAT IS GOING ON! Well both Dreamworks and Warner Brothers were contacted by Harry Knowles from Aint It Cool News

and both replied 'No comment!' Well the whole thing is just the latest advertising tactic to come from the distributers and filmmakers. But nobody has said anything and thats the cool thing. And if you're wondering how someone noticed the clues at the end of the trailer, well Harry Knowles was sent an email a few weeks back from a scooper named Clavius Base (the name of the moon base in 2001), and people are now to thinking that the email was leaked from Dreamworks or Warners to get the ball rolling. Or it could be some sad arsed movie fan out there with nothing better to do. Etheir way its all good stuff and if it did come from the Spielberg camp, you've gotta take your hat off to 'em.

Update 10/4/01 - The buzz is starting to heat up on this movie, and it just got hotter today, the brand new trailer is online in all its glory. Download it now!
