Latest updates

Wednesday 19th March 2003: Barbarella Update:
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Flower Films (Drew Barrymore's production co.) have extended their option on the rights to Barbarella for another two years it has been revealed today.

Now this is one project/remake that has has been talked about for many a year, but it now looks like they are seriously working on it. Warner Brothers have bought the rights, not to the original film starring Jane Fonda, but instead they bought the rights to two comics by Barbarella's creator Jean Claude Forest. The two comics were called Le Semble Lune, Le Miroir au Tempetes. What you say you DON'T speak French, oh ok, The Moon Like and The Mirror Of Storms.

They have signed up John August, most busy screenwriter in Hollywood : Go, Charlie's Angel's and most recently Minority Report to pen the script. This is what they are waiting for before all systems are go on the project. Drew Barrymore had this to say about the project "I don't have anything like a firm starting date yet because I'm waiting until John August is available to write the screenplay and he's still working with Steven Spielberg on Minority Report.". Barrymore then answered the question a lot of people were wanting to have answered, would she be playing the same role as Fonda? "I'm not going to play Jane Fonda's character. I might be her granddaughter." Barrymore's partner in her production company Nancy Juvonen had this to say as well "We haven't even begun to write it, but I can tell you that Drew won't be a Fembot. The new film will be about society and what happens in Utopia. It will still have some flower child ideas in it." And considering the production company is called FLOWER films that fits.

John August talked to imdb about the script that he has now apparently completed a first draft for :"First off, it's not a remake, since we don't even own the rights to the original film. Instead, it's loosely based on two other comic books in the Barbarella series,When we announced it to the trades, we said it was about 'A naïve young woman who discovers the secret behind her Utopian planet's good fortune, and finds herself leading a revolution.' Which is true. But it's also pretty funny, which you might not guess from the logline."

He also let slip some other important details for the movie, its rating PG-13, No nudity much like Charlie's Angel's "One of the things I love about the Barbarella character is her unashamed fondness for men,To her, sex is just a nice thing to do with a person, like tennis."

More news on this project as we get it!
