Battle Angel

Looks like James Cameron is FINALLY, seriously getting back to directing! Well if the casting call put out by Mali Finn Casting is anything to go by, he is certainly looking for the female lead to star in Battle Angel. Here's some snips from the announcement "... begins principal photography Spring 2006. SEEKING: FEMALE LEAD. 16-mid 20s. Any ethnicity, including Caucasian....She moves and behaves with confidence and a sense of nobility. Lithe as a cat. Athletic and agile, she is a warrior. Graceful movement and an ear for languages and dialects are essential." Methinks it'd be as easy just hiring Jessica Alba for it! Click Here for the rest

Monday 22nd November 2004: Battle Angel Alita update:
Terminator 2 director James Cameron has confirmed his next project will be the adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's anime comic Battle Angel Alita. The live action movie will have it's lead character computer generated. More info can be found at Kishiro's site.

Friday 9th May 2003: Battle Angel Alita Update:
James "Terminator" Cameron will re-visit the cyborg world with a planned big screen version of "BATTLE ANGEL ALITA", based on the popular 'manga' comic book series by writer/artist Yukito Kishiro."Battle Angel is a very real possibility, and that's the film that I fully intend to direct," Cameron said. "We've done a tremendous amount of design for the film ... we're fine-tuning the script ... it's just a matter of time."Premise of the futuristic "BATTLE ANGEL ALITA" centers on a damaged female android recovered by robot repair specialist 'Doc Ido'. Working with only a few useable parts, Ido discovers the cyborg's brain was only in 'hibernation' and he crafts a mechanical, weaponized body to fit the head.Despite her 'amnesia', the new 'Alita' slowly unlocks her past and tracks down those responsible for consigning her to the junk-pile, her body acting as a metaphor for the 'unintegrated' self, and her successive battles (similar to the struggles of 'Ripley' in "ALIENS", and 'Sarah Connor' in "TERMINATOR") will take her closer to discovering who she is and what she wants."What I like about it is that when we first meet 'Alita' she's very young, she's sort of almost pre-pubescent in a way," said Cameron. " ... she actually matures throughout the story. I like that the development of her mind actually affects her physicality."The character will be very, very true to Alita as she is in the manga."Thanks to Michael Stevens http://www.commandentertainment.com

James Cameron's been flogging the bejesus out of his latest effort "Ghosts of the Abyss" and while doing so talking to every man and his dog about the next projects on his plate. One project he hasn't touched on much is "Battle Angel Alita", and in an upcoming edition of Hot Dog magazine he belatedly addresses it. "Battle Angel is a very real possibility, and that's the film that I fully intend to direct, that I *will* direct ? the issue is will it be the next film, or will it be the one after the next film? That's really all there is to it at this point. We've done a tremendous amount of design for the film, we're fine-tuning the script, it's just a matter of time.", says Cameron.

"What I like about it is that when we first meet Alita she's very young, she's sort of almost pre-pubescent in a way, and she actually matures throughout the story. I like that, that the development of her mind actually affects her physicality. There's a lot of really great things about it, and there's a lot of things ? whether the artist really intended them or not ? that I read into it, and so I think it'll be a good fusion of what Kashiro created and how I would do things."

"The manga is very episodic and very discordant ? it's not internally consistent, meaning sometimes she looks like one thing and has one set of abilities, and at the whim of Kashiro he'll go off on a whole different tangent. It needs to be fused and focused and given a centralised storyline. But the character will be very, very true to Alita as she is in the manga."

"Motorball might find its way more into the second film ? I definitely want to do more than one film. I want to create a world and a character that can go through at least one more film, possibly more. And that's not just for the classic financial reasons, it's just that I think there's a possibility for a real mythology here, so I feel that this is a good canvas to do something big that's got more scope."

Battle Angel Alita is a manga comic that is republished throughout the world. Rumours of a possible movie started last year when some brights park plugged BattleAngelAlita.com into their browser, used the who is search and found out that the domain name was registered to 20th Century Fox! Now that is what call snooping.

Word then came in that James Cameron was maybe interested in making a movie via his Lightstorm Entertainment production company. President of Lightstorm Rae Sanchini was quizzed about this "in negotiations for all the rights, but we haven't made any decisions on talent."

So does that mean they have bought the rights or just interested, and has Fox bought the domain name just in case?
