Wednesday 12th November 2003: Big Fish Update:
The actor who starred as the banjo player in Deliverance is to appear with the instrument in Tim Burton's new movie Big Fish. Billy Redden was 16 when Deliverance was made in 1972, but he hasn't appeared on screen since then. He was found working as a cook and dishwasher in a cafe in Dillard, northeast Georgia, by members of Burton's production crew. Burton, who was on location in Alabama shooting Big Fish, said he wanted Redden for the film. "The banjo boy was such an iconic figure to me. Whatever that visceral thing is in film, when you can't explain why a scene grabs you, well, that scene had it." Redden didn't actually play the banjo in Deliverance. Director John Boorman had to use another boy to hide behind the swing Redden was on and slip his hand through Redden's sleeve to finger the changes. In Big Fish, due out next month, Redden is on screen for only a few seconds with his banjo. He said: "Tim Burton said, 'Just sit there and hold that banjo, that's it.' He was a real nice guy, a lot nicer than Burt Reynolds."

Thursday 28th August 2003: Big Fish Update:
Director Tim Burton's Big Fish is being held back from wide release by two
months to give the marketing campaign more time. The film had originally
been set for a wide release in the USA on November 26 to take advantage of
the Thanksgiving holiday, but Sony Pictures now plans a platform release in
New York, Los Angeles and Toronto beginning on December 18. It will
eventually go into wide release in 2,500 theaters on January 23. Because the
film bows on a Thursday, it will be sandwiched between the scheduled
December 17 opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King the day
before and Mona Lisa Smile the day after.

Saturday 9th August 2003: Big Fish Update:
Producer Richard D. Zanuck has been talking about the upcoming Tim
Burton-directed Big Fish, which features Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney,
Jessica Lange, Danny DeVito, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Buscemi, Billy
Crudup, Alison Lohman and Hailey Anne Nelson. From the sound of it, he's
quite confident about the film. "This is at the top of the list," he said.
"Certainly not since Driving have I ever had such a good, positive feeling.
But we're not in it for the weekend, we're in it for the long haul. I feel
in my heart that this is a marvelous film.

A report from an extra on the Big Fish filming has just been sent in "
It took place in Jackson Lake Park .
The scene was called the indian brave screne.
It was a dust scene, my son was one of the little
boys camping out in the woods dressed like little indians
while Ewan Mcgregor told a story around the camp fire to the boys .
The story was a tall tale about catching the biggest fish.
Ewan was dress as a indian chief. The era was in the 70's."

Monday 5th May 2003: Big Fish Update:
Just received the following information on the reason Big Fish filmed in Wetumpka "
I just returned from the 10th annual Alabama Writer's symposium in Monroeville, Alabama where I was pleased to meet Daniel Williams the author of Big Fish and Brian Kurlander the office director who was responsible for helping Alabama to "land" the filming of the movie in Wetumpka. Interestingly, Brian described how he carefully chose a 127 mile radius of of sites to woe Tim Burton to the idea. Brian related that when Burton saw Jackson Lake with its Spanish Moss and its bleached white dead trees he was sold!!. Also, Huntington College with its beautiful Gothic architecture suited Burton's style to a tee. Brian was afraid that he had lost the deal when while riding the rapids along the Coosa River their flatboat hit a rock and pitched them into the water. "And I came so close...," he remembers thinking to himself. But the river on helped to embrace Burton and his crew all the more. They were rescue and Alabama did not lose Big Fish to Georgia or Savannah or New Orleans.PS: Daniel Williams is a Birmingham native." Thanks to Carol!

Monday 27th April 2003: Big Fish Update:
The following set report from the filming of Big Fish in a North Korean scene that took place between 28th March and 31st March. Thanks to Rom!
" Next to numerous trailer trucks and portable
restrooms, several tents were set up for a changing
room, a dinning room, cosmetics, etc. at a dusty side
of a golf course. Most of the extras were suited up as
North Korean soldiers aimlessly wandering around the
tents or sitting in the dinning room staring at their
food. It wasn't the fact that most of the people were
strangers to one another but rather the fact that none
really knew exactly what was waiting at the shooting -
namely, what they were fighting for that night. Some
were just easing their minds with free ice cream or
distracting themselves with idle chatting.

When darkness blanketed over Montgomery and all the
soldiers in unfit boots were bussed over to the
shooting place, the excitement in each person grew
fast. Specially a huge wooden structure set with red
curtains illuminated by balloon-shaped lightings told
everything they needed to know about the mission at
that night. Some were told to aim invisible guns and
others were never captured by the camera despite their
hope to be 'discovered'. However being there with real
film crew and the famous director made all worthwhile.
When same simple scenes were shot repeatedly and the
late night claimed its toll from tiresome mortal
bodies, the soldiers started to lose the morale of
the fight for Big Fish, dozing whenever possible,
until twin showgirls with revealing bodies rescued
them. Their subtle sensual movements and the
background song with sweet voices promising double
pleasure were awakening. We all really didn't need to
be told to act out our excitement."

Wednesday 12th March 2003: Big Fish Update:
Just received the following set report from Big Fish "I have been an extra on the set for the past week and am going back next week as well. We have been doing a carnival/circus scene set in the 1950's. It is like being in a time warp because everybody looks so authentic. The wardrobe, hair and makeup departments are maticulous about every detail of the extras, even though we are not used very much at all. Danny DeVito has been really cool with all of the extras, taking time to stop for pictures, waving when he drives by, and carrying on conversations with the crowds in between takes. Euwin McGregor was at the carnival scene on Friday and had to wrestle a pig. Yes, he is as good looking in person. There was also this really fat man who plays the fat man in the circus (one of the circus sideshows) and Euwin has a big brush and is scrubbing this big man in a tub. Rain has made the set a little unpleasant because we are filming right near the river by the river run golf course. The water is rising and taking over the area. The crew was having to build up the road so that we could get to and from the set. At the carnival scene, there are rides such as a merry go round, ferris wheel, scrambler and rocket. Tim Burton was getting very frustrated because we had to take long breaks in between takes because the rides would not start back up and also some riders were getting sick and caused more delays. It has been a great experience and I can't wait to see the movie." Thanks to Anon!

Wednesday 26th February 2003: Big Fish Update:
Another set report for Big Fish today " The scene I saw was of Ewan's character, Young Edward, getting the key to the city on the courthouse steps. The giant was there in the scene with him. That guy is well, ...a giant. The remaining filming for that day was then done in the sound stage in Montgomery. I wish it wouldn't have rained so I could have seen more. On the set I also saw Tim Burton, producer Richard Zanuck, and cinematographer Philippe Rousselot. While in Montgomery I was also lucky to spot Steve Buscemi getting some coffee. I didn't talk to him or anything, but was glad to see him just hanging around. The way that Wetumpka has been transformed into a town from the 1950s is amazing to see. I also went out to Jackson Lake where some scenes have been filmed. It is a nice area and I'm sure that the cast and crew are having and enjoyable stay in Alabama. I'd love to go back." Thanks to Anna!

Monday 9th February 2003: Big Fish Update:
Just received the following set report from Big Fish today " I was an extra on Feb. 3 during the 13 hour shoot of the Funeral Scene at a small church in Deatsville, AL - about a 40 minute drive north of Montgomery. It was the main character's (Albert Finney) funeral. The scene was of family and friends outside the church arriving at the graveside funeral - Jessica Lange, Billy Crudup, Robert Guilone. Danny Devito was also in the scene along with some circus characters - a 7'5" giant (it was really painful to look at him, but hard to turn away). Helena Bonham Carter was also in the scene. Ewan McGregor was not in the scene (he is a young Albert Finney) but he came to watch. Buzz around Montgomery is that Helena Bonham Carter is pregnant and married to Tim Burton. I know who her OB/GYN is here in Montgomery. " Thanks to Bullet!

Monday 9th February 2003: Big Fish Update:
Just received a report from Sandy about the currently filming Big Fish. She says "I watched them i downtown Wetumpka, they did a car chase scene that was very exciting to watch. This weekend they will be filming a parade and a funeral. It was really exciting to watch and see how the filming is done with all the cameras and equipment they use" Thanks to Sandy!

Tuesday 4th February 2003: Big Fish Update:
Just received an email about the currently filming Big Fish "Just an update on the filming of this movie…. They are in Pike Road, Alabama this minute. It is a very small town outside of Montgomery, AL. Population 247! One of their 18 wheelers is stuck in front of my house as we speak, buried in prairie gumbo mud! The driver thought he could drive on our wonderful soil, but isn’t familiar with the quick sand properties it possesses when wet. The film crew is planning to be here a couple days and then moving on." Thanks to Charles!

Tuesday 28th January 2003: Big Fish Update:
Working with the movie folks through the Fire Department in Wetumpka. Today was a long day of filming. They got started this morning at 7:30am and continued until 8:30pm. After talking to the crew and "Worker Bee's" around the set, I feel that this might be a sleeper cell just waiting to break out. All of the reviews I have been reading would leave one wondering if they should go and see it. Maybe I am too close to the action and have become caught up in it, but I think the story is a good one and the filming will compliment it. The cast is certainly big, bigger than the fish in fact. Another big scene to be filmed here on the 29th of January. Should be somewhat action packed with a bank robbery. 'Thanks to Steve'.
