Wednesday 17th July 2003: Bride and Prejudice Update:
Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha has said her Bollywood version
of Pride and Prejudice will span several continents. Chadha, who begins
filming this week, said Austen's book was ideal for adaptation. "Jane Austen
must have been a Punjabi girl in a previous life," she told the BBC
recently. "Our version may have different cultures and settings, but it's
still about people marrying from different backgrounds." Chadha's movie will
include song and dance routines and locations including India, the UK and
U.S. "Other British films are said to be 'too small and inward-looking' but
this hopefully pushes the boundaries of what British cinema is," she said.
The film, renamed Bride and Prejudice, stays faithful to Austen's original
story, although the Bennett family become the Bakshis, and Mr Darcy becomes
a wealthy American. His unsavoury friend Mr Bingley is still an Englishman,
in this case a barrister.

Friday 9th May 2003: Bride and Prejudice Update:
Miramax Films has pre-bought from Pathe the North American and Latin
American distribution rights to director Gurinder Chadha's untitled
Bollywood musical. Based on Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice,
the film will star Martin Henderson and Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai
and will be set in India, London and Los Angeles. "This promises to be a
spectacular musical and visual production," Miramax co-chairman Harvey
Weinstein said. "We're thrilled to be in business with Pathe and a director
as talented as Gurinder, who I've admired for some time." Writer-director
Chadha, whose film Bend It Like Beckham recently entered the U.S. top ten,
hopes that the new film will resonate with American audiences unfamiliar
with the genre. "My intention with this film is to introduce Bollywood
cinema with a British twist to all the towns and cities and the heart of
people across America.”

Monday 14th April 2003: Bride and Prejudice Update:
The Ring star Martin Henderson has apparently been cast as Darcy in Pathe
UK's Bollywood musical version of Pride and Prejudice. Bend It Like Beckham
director Gurinder Chadha has cast the rising New Zealand star to appear
alongside Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai. The new film is an all-singing,
all-dancing take on Jane Austen's novel.

Monday 9th December 2002: Bride and Prejudice Update:
Director Gurinder Chadha has announced she has cast Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World in her upcoming reinvention of the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice, the movie will change the title to Bride and Prejudice. Chadha had this to say about the movie "an extremely cheeky, irreverent film. It'll also be a truly international one. It'll be set in India, England and America and the biggest star of Indian cinema, Aishwarya Rai – the former Miss World – is cast."

Saturday 2nd November 2002: Bride and Prejudice Update:
The director of UK hit movie Bend It Like Beckham is following it up with a musical based on Pride and Prejudice. The director Gurinder Chadha is in India working with her co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges on the lyrics and music. The lead role of Mr Darcy will be played by an an american actor, who has still t be ast with the rest of the cast all being Bollywood actors and actresses.
