Tuesday 11th January 2005: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Update:
Is it just me, but after being all excited at the prospect of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp doing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but was the trailer more than a little disappointing. The movie looked damn similar to the original version from the 60's, and Depp's hair, was that naff or what. I sure as hell hope Burton doesn't do with this what he did with his other remake The Planet of the Apes and sour our memories of what was a classic movie of its time.

Tim and I have had a couple of meetings, sat down and had some talks about where he wants to go, where we need to go. And I think it's gonna be great, you know? Big shoes[to fill], though. Gene Wilder did such an awesome job in that film in the early '70s, so I mean, taking that character of Willy Wonka and going somewhere completely different is ... he sort of made the job infinitely more difficult for me."

Thursday 4th December 2003: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Update:
Director Tim Burton has been talking about his upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in which Johnny Depp will play Willy Wonka. Burton says while the 1971 Gene Wilder film was a bit on the sappy side, the new version won't be. "Well, I don't want to crush people's childhood dreams, but the original film is sappy," he said. "It's sappy when it shouldn't be sappy and it's weird. Let's just say it's not one of my personal favorites. I'd rate Chitty Chitty Bang Bang much higher." Burton added that he has wanted to do the remake for years. "I responded to the children's book because it respected that children can be adults and I think adults forget that. There can be darkness and sort of foreboding. Very sinister things are very much a
part of childhood. I like that sort of humour and emotion put together." And why did he pick Depp for the role? "I just like working with him. He's always surprising and fun."

Tuesday 25th November 2003: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Update:
Director Tim Burton has been talking about forthcoming project Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. "I have no idea when we'll begin on Willy," he said. "It will all depend on the script. I won't be tied down to a release date ever again." Burton added that he chose Johnny Depp over actors such as Michael Keaton because "he's always surprising and funny and right now he's a big star." Burton also said that he won't be involved in any sequel to his Planet of the Apes. "No, no, no, never. After having made Batman Returns, I realized it's not a good idea for me to do sequels."

So it's just, Okay, where do I go from there? Gene Wilder did something very beautiful and it's time to take it somewhere else."

News reaches us today from Variety that Gwyn Lurie has been hired by Warner Brothers to pen the screenplay for Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Lurie is the latest scribe to tackle the script after Scott Frank's (Get Shorty) failed to impress execs at the studio. Coming Soon reported the following,

"Lurie will ignore the original movie and start from scratch on her adaptation of Dahl's 1964 novel, which described a fantastical world in which a loony chocolatier tempted every child in London with the possibility of finding a golden ticket inside one of his bars. The five lucky winners were then entitled to a visit to his mysterious candy factory, one that would have lifelong repercussions for all involved".

It also looks as if Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little 2) is now in talks to direct, but still, nohing has been confirmed.

Page created. The second adaptation of Roald Dahl's excellent childrens novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is in development over at Warner Brothers. There is no exact date for production to kick off, but late 2001 has been mentioned. With the probable sucess of Harry Potter, also released by Warner Brothers, this project may be a good bet for the studio after Potter hits cinemas in November. Attached at the moment to direct is Pleasantville helmer, Gary Ross, who certainly fits the bill and sounds like a great choice after the aforementioned, hugely enjoyable movie. Out Of Sight, Get Shorty and Dead Again scribe Scott Frank has written the screenplay and such actors as Nicolas Cage and John C. Reilly have expressed interest to play the role of Willy Wonka. Back last year, Marilyn Manson was also rumoured to play the choloate factory owner in the press over here in the UK. The next day, Warner Brothers issued a statement saying that this was not true and that a choice to play Wonka would not be decided until the filming date is set, of which it has not as of yet.
