2000AD
fans will remember the original Hardware. The movie made by
Richard Stanley that so gleefully stole its story from a Future
Shock in the comic and that ended up with the 2000AD creators
Steve Macmanus and Kevin O'Neill getting a credit on the movie
and a financial settlement.
Richard Stanley moved onto other projects including Dust Devil.
But in 1996 he announced that he had a script prepared for
a sequel to Hardware. He was going to use the same homicidal
robot from the first one, but set the movie 7 years ahead.
This was announced ibn an interview with Fangoria magazine,
but he also stated that he would change the title and break
any link to the first movie in order to get the movie made.
MY question to that would be, could the 2000AD creators not
come back to him and accuse him of ripping them off again?
Little was heard of this project again. Stanley then moved
on after Dust Devil to start filming The Island Of Dr. Moreau
with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, and I mean started the
shoot was less than two weeks under way and he was removed
by the studio to be replaced by John Frankenheimer. And as
I'm sure you know that movie was awful.
Little
has been heard of Stanley since other than two writing jobs
for small movies Treasure of Pirate's Point and Fly Boy. I
doubt we will ever see a sequel to Hardware this long after
the original's release. The project has no cult status and
the director has little or no power left to weild in Hollywood
after the Dr Moreau debacle.
