Thursday 4th February 2004: Constantine Update:
Rumours are circulating that Alan Moore has totally disowned the Constantine movie and has even rejected his payment for use of the character. My opinion of this is that it is utter hogwash. Alan Moore has never before taken any interest in the adaptations of his characters, very much stating that a movie is a different thing from a comic book. Why would he choose to attack this project which isn't even complete yet? Would he not have chosen to attack the crap that was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Monday 1st December 2003: Constantine Update:
Keanu Reeves has been talking about Constantine "[John Constantine] is a guy who's angry and ambivalent. There's a line in it: 'God has a plan for all of us. Some people like it, and some people don't.' That's kind of my Constantinian take on it. Some people like it. John Constantine doesn't like it, but he likes it. Well, we're hoping to make a PG-13 film. I'm playing a character who is damned, and he's trying to escape hell. He goes to Gabriel [Tilda Swinton] and says, 'Come on, I'm taking demons out of little girls. Who's that for?' Gabriel says, 'Well, you don't believe.' I go, 'I believe, for Christ's sake!' He says, 'No, you don't. You know you don't have faith.' After that [encounter with Gabriel], you see my character with scratches on his back, and he's drinking some whiskey, and he's just made love with a demon. So we're trying to deliver a PG-13 film. My feet are on the floor by the bed, and she's under the covers".

Wednesday 26th November 2003: Constantine Update:
Julius has been in touch with the following "Variety has published an excellent interview with producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the X-Men franchise and more. Here's a clip about Constantine and X-Men 3...

Fans also have been vocal about "Constantine," whose comicbook premise of a
chain-smoking, hard-drinking con artist and occultist with real magical
knowledge is about as far removed from superheroes as you can get.
Aficionados' foremost concern is the recasting of the comics' very English
John Constantine as an American. But Shuler Donner, who believes fans will be happy with Reeves, says the character's bad attitude and irreverence has survived intact. "It's extremely close in spirit. John Constantine is a really unique character
because he walks the line between good and bad, between hell and heaven. He
doesn't care if he's liked."

After "Constantine," Shuler Donner plans a short break from comics to do the
drama "The Secret Life of Bees" and then is back for "X3." For the third
installment, she wants to include a loquacious, blue-furred scientist called
the Beast and a sequence in the "X-Men's" training center, the Danger Room."

Monday 24th November 2003: Constantine Update:
Rocker has been in touch with the following info on Constantine "Michael Uslan is also producing the film Constantine. the film is most likely going to be released in September of next year."

Tuesday 14th October 2003: Constantine Update:
Rachel Weisz has been talking about working on Constantine, in which she stars with Keanu Reeves. Filming has just started on the movie, with reunites Weisz with her Chain Reaction co-star. Reeves plays a detective who's literally been to hell and back, and uses his supernatural powers to help Weisz's character uncover the truth about her sister's death. "We just started filming about two weeks ago here in Los Angeles, and it's going well," said Weisz. "I'm playing a LAPD homicide detective who's very guilt ridden. She's a very interesting character, and Keanu's great." Director Francis Lawrence added: "Constantine has a hardboiled detective edge and a punk Sid Vicious attitude. He smokes, he drinks and is sarcastic and wry. He's not a blond Englishman, but the heart of the character is intact."

Monday 8th September 2003: Constantine Update:
Gavin Rossdale and Djimon Hounsou are to star in next year's Constantine for director Francis Lawrence. Based on an adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comic book Hellblazer, the film also stars Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton. Rossdale will play Balthazar, a nemesis of Reeves' character, while Hounsou will star as Papa Midnite, the owner of an occult club who was once a demon fighter like Constantine (Reeves) but is now trying to get out of the business.

Monday 25th August 2003: Constantine Update:
Tilda Swinton is in talks to star in Constantine opposite Keanu Reeves. The
adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comic book Hellblazer will be directed by
Francis Lawrence. Reeves will star as John Constantine, a man who dabbles in
the occult and teams up with a female police officer to fight evil forces.
Rachel Weisz will play Angela, the cop who becomes involved with Constantine
when her twin sister dies in a mysterious suicide. Swinton would play
Gabriel, a rogue angel battling Constantine.

Friday 22nd August 2003: Constantine Update:
Word reaches us that Rachel Weisz has signed on to star in Constantine alongside Keanu Reeves. She will play Angela, a detective with a preternatural sense of being in the right place. Filming is due to start in September 22nd in L.A.

Friday 1st August 2003: Constantine Update:
Stan Winston has been talking about his current projects to Moviehole
"Right now, I'm in the middle of working on a wonderful movie over at
Columbia with Laura Ziskin, who did Spider-Man, called Constantine, based
on a comic called Hellblazer. I can't say too much, because of a
confidentially agreement I have with them, but the script is wonderful and
we're working on some great character designs for it, says Winston. I've
also just done some work on Tim Burton's new film called Big Fish, and I
hope to soon get a script off the ground here at my own production company
for a film called "Me and My Monster", which is really great" Click Here

Wednesday 20th May 2003: Constantine Update:
Keanu Reeves has been talking about his role in the forthcoming Hellblazer
and why it proved so appealing. "[It's] his anger. He's angry, but he's got
a good heart," Reeves said recently of the comic book badass, whose real
name is John Constantine. In the Hellblazer comic, Constantine is an
Englishman with occult powers who is both a liar and a cheat, but is often
prone to doing the right thing. Reeves said he hopes to get moving on the
big-screen adaptation, which will apparently be called Constantine, as soon
as September. The film is tentatively scheduled for summer 2004.

Friday 2nd May 2003: Constantine Update:
Producer Lauren Shuler-Donner has been talking about development on Constantine "It's really focused on John Constantine, and it's more spiritual. He sends demons back down to hell," The movie is due to go into production on September.

Thursday 17th April 2003: Constantine Update:
Producer Lauren Schuler Donner has been talking about Keanu Reeves being signed up as John Constantine Hellblazer "He's hot in the role, he's perfect for Hellblazer because he has that innocent quality about him, a bit naive, but someone you like. He's a bit like Tarzan, or a hero like that. But this time, he sends demons to hell."

Saturday 12th October 2002: Constantine Update:
Director Francis Lawrence is being sought to direct Constantine. Constantine will star Keanu Reeves as John Constantine the occult detective. The script is being rewritten by Mark Bomback and Frank Cappello.

Tuesday 8th October 2002: Constantine Update:
TNMC have scored a review of the script for the much troubled Constantine project. Here's a snip "Sometimes you can read a script and tell that something is wrong, that it just isn't as good as it could be, but for the life of you, you cannot pin down exactly why. There isn't a specific failing. When I reviewed Paul Anderson's script for Resident Evil about a year ago, I had this particular problem. RE was just... all right. I suppose the worst you could say about it was that it never went far enough, because you couldn't pin down one big fat honking mistake that squandered the entire screenplay.I make this my introduction because, in trying to find something good about this undated draft for Constantine (credited to Kevin Brodbin), the best I could do was say that its mistakes are clear, and clearly fixable. They are also, unfortunately, huge, and fixing them would basically mean throwing out the bulk of this draft and starting over from scratch."

Thursday 26th September 2002: Constantine Update:
Director Francis Lawrence has signed up to direct Constantine the much troubled project that was to have been directed by Tarsem. The real question that has to be asked how, is with another director attached will they change the setting and character back to British? Constantine is based on the comic book character created by Alan Moore.

Constantine is a DC comics character called John Constantine who first appeared in Swamp Thing and then got his own comic called Hellblazer. Best way to describe it is that he is an occult detective. Sounds naff I know, but Constantine is one of the best characters ever created for comics. He's a complex character, downtrodden, amoral, smokes fags like a chimney, morose, dark and enigmatic.

Reports of a movie adaptation began back in 1997 with word that a script had been written by a Mark Bomback and a Paul Hunter attached to direct.Producing was Lauren Shuler-Donner. She announced that the movie was still being developed and with a new writer "Yes, Constantine/Hellblazer is in active development and should be in production this year. Warner Brothers is the studio. I am producer. No director is set yet. Frank Cappello is the current writer."

And now for the script by Frank Cappello, well he stirred up quite a hornet's nest with this one as he changed Constantine from being BRITISH to AMERICAN. Some people might say why is that important, but every fibre of Constantine is British , he's dour, sarcastic, downtrodden, which is something that I tend to find is not as much a part of the Americanm psyche. This is what he had to say about the change "Yes, Constantine was British and he had a lot to say against the queen and all her court's warts but do you really believe Warner Brothers OR DC Comics wants to make a major American motion picture whose main character's biggest pet peeves and constant ravings are about the British government? It's that 'attitude' of John's, his unwillingness to let things slide even in the face of death, that is so special, that's what's most important to capture. If you can't live with that, then you won't go. Fine. For the rest of the audience, though, John Constantine will be a very fresh character in a sea of worthless devil movies."

Fresh is not a word I would ever associate with Constantine though. Yes the thing about Constantine is his attitude, but it's only because he is British that he has such an attitude. I think I can best explain that by in Britain we tend to look for the negative side, whereas America tries to look for the positive.Well after working on the script for a while and getting a lot of stick on the Warner Brothers messageboard he backtracked on the change and was going to try and get the script rewritten again to make Constantine British again. "I'm going to request that I rewrite [the character] English. I'm serious about this. Maybe I've seen the light or maybe it's the Guinness or maybe it's my wife watching Notting Hill for the twentieth time, but there is NO REASON not to make John English. None. Even if it means an American plays him. Not only would it be proper for realizing the true character but the flavor of his rantings wouldn't have to include American Cuss words which would make John more crude and less cool. There are so many English cuss words that get right by the censors here. I will bring this up as soon as everyone regroups. Right now it is scheduled as an 'After Strike' picture, which means no one knows when it will go."

Word then turned to a director for the movie with Lauren Schuler-Donner announcing that Tarsem was on board "We're so excited to have Tarsem on board, not only because of his visual style but for the way he will approach this character, who treads a fine line between good and evil." I can see this having the fans up in arms again. Constantine is gritty, whereas I would describe Tarsem's style as moving colourful paintings. Tarsem is very visual whereas the visuals in Constantine are not that important, its more about dialogue. You could set Constantine in a dusty warehouse, shoot it all at night and it would work just fine as the dialogue would be what drove the project not beautiful haunting imagery.

The most recent word is that acclaimed comic book artist Tim Bradstreet is trying to get involved with the project " I'm putting together a package for Donner Productions. They have the Hellblazer project and I would really like to get on board with it. I've heard that they are changing much with the character which is a shame, but maybe I can help to bring some grit and gristle to what they DO have. My ears are always open and I'm building some very good relationships and contacts."
