Star Wars Producer Rick McCallum has revealed that
the digital print for Revenge of the Sith may have
differences from the celluloid version "The
digital version of the movie will be different from
the version that goes out on film. That has to be
locked down so much earlier, whereas the digital
can go right up to a week-and-a-half before the
film comes out. " Which, considering that George
Lucas has already said he has finished the movie
seems a bit strange? |

Update:
On one hand I so want Episode III to suck so it might finally
kill off the corporation that is the Star Wars franchise and
finally put a full stop on that era of our childhood 25 plus
years ago. But the 10 year old kid in me wants to see the final
part and wrap up the story in a way that makes me have the same
sense of awe and wonder that I did then. Here's hoping for the
latter on 19th May.

Producer Rick McCallum has revealed that the reshoots/pickups
for Episode III will take place this August "Due to actor
scheduling unavailability, it became better for us to do this
in August, when everybody would be free." He then talked
about how work is progressing on the digital character General
Grevious "The wireframe model has been built and approved,
and now we are starting modeling and animating him," and
also talked about the voice for the character "We haven't
even looked for him yet," says McCallum. "There's
still a long way to go. Voice-work for Grievous and other characters
isn't likely to begin until August or November." Let's
hope they rethink the look of this character as well!

Monday
16th February 2004: Episode III Update:
On the Force.net
light sabre co-ordinator Nick Gillard has been speaking about
the all-out battle that will be Star Wars Episode III...
"It's
going to be the best prequel. I can't see how it won't be. Episode
III has got everything the other films had and more! The movie
is 60 to 70 per cent fighting. Ewan [McGregor, Obi-Wan Kenobi]
had 1,000 moves to learn, as opposed to the three pages he had
to learn in The Phantom Menace.
There's
tons of fighting in this one. Episode III also ties in beautifully
with all the other movies. And when I read the script, I was
really surprised by how emotional it is. Everyone working on
the film took so much care with it. Nobody wants to get it wrong".
Tuesday
13th January 2004: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
News reaches us that ILM have been given the first major sequence
of Episode III to complete the finished effects for. They are
working from animatics that George Lucas has supervised. The
scene in question is the opening space battle between the Republic
and the Separitists. ILM are hoping to have 160 effect shots
completed by May 2004. That would still leave nearly 2,000 shots
to be completed before the film's release!
Tuesday
6th January 2004: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
News reaches us that George Lucas is planning three separate
sessions of reshoots/additional filming for Episode III. The
first will take place in London in March, with the others being
planned for November and February 2005. Also news reaches us
that actor Wayne Pygram has been signed up to play a character
from A New Hope, and the rumour has it that it will be a young
Grand Moff Tarkin, who was played by Peter Cushing!
Monday
5th January 2004: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
Natalie Portman has been discussing the much fabled fight between
Obi-Wan and Anakin in Episode III "I saw a pretty amazing
fight scene between Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. It's
pretty sick. They did it all themselves. They were thinking of
having stuntmen do it, but they were better than the stuntmen.
It's pretty awesome."
Tuesday
30th December 2003 Episode III Update:
Check out the latest photos of the stars from the next Star
Wars movie here.
Tuesday 2nd December 2003: Episode 3 Update:
Initial effects work has started at Industrial Light & Magic on Star Wars Episode III. ILM artists are preparing the digital assets required for the estimated 2,000 visual effects shots to be delivered, and the teams are closely examining the previsualized sequences provided by the Animatics Department from Skywalker Ranch. At this stage, the ILM team is currently a small fraction of what it will become. "Right now, we've got about 18 or 19 people," said producer Rick McCallum. "We've probably got 150 [digital] vehicles, objects, and model work done and painted. George comes down to ILM every Thursday and we spend a couple of hours going through all the models. We started our Matte Department, we've got three matte painters that are working on five set backgrounds."
Thursday 27th November 2003: Star Wars: Epsiode III Update:
A ton of info on how work is progressing on Episode III has been revealed on the official site: "We're breaking down the first 25 minutes, which we need to have from George locked by January 5th, so that we just keep moving," describes Producer Rick McCallum.
Each day Ben Burtt and Roger Barton, the editors of "Episode III," continue cutting away, finding the best takes, and piecing together continuous action and scenes to tell the story.
"What happens is that George comes in about 8 a.m, answers his mail, and works with Ben from 9 to 12:30," McCallum says, describing the typical working day. "Ben's doing all the action sequences and cutting together the animatics for those, like the opening space battle, and two other sequences that are the primary things he has to work on. Roger is doing the drama, and George works with him from 2:30 until 6."
Barton and Burtt are also identifying the missing pieces of the puzzle. With so much of the movie yet to be developed as visual effects, there is much that is missing. The editors have the tools needed to temporarily fill in the gaps. Next to Burtt's AVID workstation is a microphone. Into this, he records placeholder dialogue for digital characters or principal actor dialogue that has been changed.
The two editors also have their disposal a tool called iViz. This computer graphics package allows the creation of quick-and-dirty low-resolution digital stand-ins to previsualize the characters that ILM will eventually create to populate the scene. "You load in your models, and you have a virtual camera you can actually move around. It helps George plan out a shot in real time," says McCallum.
In between his sessions with both editors, Lucas heads upstairs to the Animatics Department. In the film industry, animatics are generally regarded as a pre-production function, but the malleable nature of digital filmmaking has blurred the lines between pre and postproduction. Previsualization Supervisor Dan Gregoire's group of artists are designing the motion of entirely synthetic shots, plugging in low-resolution versions of digital elements into plate photography, and pre-planning live action sequences to be shot in later rounds of additional photography. There are entire sequences that were not shot during principal photography in Australia, but are instead reserved for shooting planned for next year. These rounds of production are also for "re-shoots," additions, inserts or modifications of sequences that add and/or replace what was shot this past summer.
"In March, we'll most probably go to London, since it'll be easier for scheduling. I'd like to able to isolate the Wookiee shoot, and do that in Australia at a later date, so that I don't have to bring everybody from Australia over to London," says McCallum.
"It's going really well," adds McCallum. "I'm really pleased. Hopefully, by Christmas we'll really see the film for the first time."
Tuesday 25th November 2003: Episode III Update:
Ewan McGregor has been talking about Star Wars: Episode III. He says that although principal shooting on the final chapter is complete, he expects to be called back for some re-shoots in March. "It's been the pattern with the first two, so I'm keeping most of March free," he said. McGregor added that while shooting the Star Wars movies is not actor-friendly, with a lot of the acting in front of blue screen, the great reward is how the fans have responded. "Children see the wonder of it all. When young fans come up to me and ask what it was like to use the light sabre and things like that, I see myself at their age. I'm happy to be a small part of something that has meant so much to so many people and will continue to do so."
Thursday 20th November 2003: Episode III Update:
Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson have been talking about Star Wars: Episode III (spoiler alert). "You'll hear the [Darth Vader] breathing. I might get in trouble just for saying that. I do get to finalize my character arc, and where that ends up most people know." He went on: "There's an amazing light sabre fight that'll knock people's socks off. Geographically, it covers the most distance of any other swordfight on film. And depending on the way they cut it, it should be the longest swordfight, time wise, that's ever been on film." As for Jackson's character, Mace Windu, he said: "Yeah it was hard work, a lot harder than before. You get what you ask for sometimes, and it's... ah, damn! So, I ended up in Australia, and then I guess I had to rehearse for eight days before I actually shot it, and learned a 137-move sabre fight. It was crazy."
Saturday 15th November 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update: Carnegie Mellon University has inducted George Lucas' "Star Wars" droid 'R2-D2' into its newly-established "Robot Hall of Fame" in a recent ceremony at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center, November 10. NASA's 'Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment' (MFEX), aka 'Sojourner', along with 'Unimate' the first industrial robot and 'HAL-9000' from Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", created by sci-fi author Sir Arthur C. Clarke, were also inducted in the first annual Hall of Fame event. The Hall of Fame was created to honor robots and their creators.
There are two categories :
1. 'Real robots': Robots that have served an actual or potentially useful function and demonstrated real skill.
2. 'Fictional Robots' : Robots that have achieved fame as fictional characters .
A panel of experts, including author Clarke, 'MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab Director' Rodney Brooks, Raj Reddy, founder of the 'Robotics Institute' and Minoru Asada, founder of the 'International RoboCup Federation' chose robots in each category to be inducted.
"The jury for the Robot Hall of Fame chose R2-D2 to be one of the first robots inducted ... because he represents our highest hope for what robots might do for humans," said James H. Morris, dean of Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science who conceived the Hall of Fame concept.
"In the Star Wars stories he performs countless services and save the lives of humans many times. He seems to understand technology deeply and responds to human needs unerringly. He does not try to imitate humans or compete with them. He's all robot!"
Kathleen Holliday, Director of Special Programs at Lucasfilm, accepted for R2-D2.

Thursday 13th November 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
Samuel L. Jackson has been talking about playing Mace Windu again in Star
Wars: Episode III, claiming that George Lucas won't disappoint in the final
prequel. “I think in Episode III he's definitely answered a lot of the
questions that people had over the years about how this particular thing
happened, or why this person is this way, you know...who is connected to
this and who is connected to that. But I think he's also done what a lot of
people have asked and probably gone a little further in that people were so
angry about the first episode because they thought it was just a kiddy movie
and the second episode because it is kind of, well...that didn't answer all
the things we need. So now, he has put all these things together and tied it
up. It’s very dark and Shakespearean...and adult, and more violent than a
Star Wars movie used to be. Hopefully they'll be satisfied with this
particular episode.”
Thursday 6th November 2003: Star Wars Episode III Update:
Hayden Christensen has been talking about Star Wars: Episode III: “There's
no question that there was an excitement on this film that wasn't as
prominent on the last, particularly George's approach, [which] was much more
hands on this time around as far as how much he wanted to relate motivation
and sort of the things that actors like to talk about. And just the inherent
art of what Anakin's journey is was more enthralling than the last and there
was more for me to sink my teeth into and that final transition is one for
the books. It'll be a neat film, definitely."
Friday 24th October 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
Ian McDiarmid, who plays Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode III, has
been talking about his role in the eagerly anticipated movie. He says his
character will be featured in "action-packed scenes" for the first time when
the third prequel hits cinemas in 2005. "You'd imagine that my character has
been rather deskbound in the past, but this time he will get to take part in
the action," he reveals. "I can't give the story away, as George Lucas would
kill me, but I have been engaged in far more physical activities than any of
the other films. I have found myself sliding down chutes at speed and
landing on heaps of rubber, it's been a completely new experience for me. I
haven't had to go down the gym to get fit for the scenes, but I did need a
few rehearsals to get up to speed. Most of my scenes have been with Anakin
Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) who eventually becomes Darth Vader.” He adds:
"There's a lot of anticipation about the movie and I think it will be worth
the wait."

Monday 20th October 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
Hayden Christensen has been talking about his transformation into Darth
Vader in the next Star Wars film. "My character in this one is more or less
in the entire film, in every scene in the movie,” he said in a recent
interview. “The character arc is very specific and graduates to the dark
side nicely. It was a great part to play. It's definitely darker in tone,
but I turn into Darth Vader, so how could it not be?" He added: "In the
first act of the film, there's lots of adventure and Ewan [McGregor] and I
are in our element there acting as Jedi Knights. There's a nice banter
between the two of us. It has its light-hearted humour but, as the film
progresses, it gets darker and darker."

A 13-year-old New Zealand actress has been cast as a "regal leader" in the
latest Star Wars movie. Aucklander Keisha Castle-Hughes, who won rave
reviews for her acting debut in Whale Rider, is thought to be playing the
Queen of Naboo. Keisha's agent, Graham Dunster, has refused to discuss Star
Wars Episode 3, which will be released in 2005, but says most of the filming
has been completed. Earlier this year, Castle-Hughes stated she had no
ambition to make a career in Hollywood.
Friday 19th September 2003: Episode 3 Update:
Shooting has wrapped 5 days early but completion of the final prequel is still 18 months away with all the CG shots to be carried out. As producer Rick McCallum puts it "Shooting the film is only a small part of the whole process. George is enthusiastic about getting back to the Ranch and starting the next component. This will enable him to start thinking about what he needs to pick up when we shoot in March 2004. For George and I, this is only the mid-way point. We still have eighteen months to get through." Grand Moff Tarkin will appear with an unknown actor cast and made up to look like a young Peter Cushing.

Monday 8th September 2003: Star Wars Episode 3 Update:
In Star Wars Episode 3 Vader wont have the same suit as in the original trilogy but it will be similar. All vehicles will start to look like the originals. All of Vaders injurys will be revealed except 1. Tarkin might be in the film. Darth Sideous might wield a lightsaber. Count Dooku will be decapitated. One of the main characters is a clone and its not Boba Fett. The dark jedi is the cooest looking star wars villian yet.

News from the set of Star Wars: Episode III is that three members of the
Naberrie family will be part of the cast once again, even though they never
made it to the theatrical cut of Episode II. The family’s brief appearance
was only included among the deleted scenes on the DVD, but the trio will
apparently feature in the next movie. So, Claudia Karva will again play
Padmé Amidala's sister, Sola Naberrie, while child actors Hayley Mooy and
Keira Wingate will again appear as Pooja and Ryoo Naberrie respectively,
daughters of Sola.
Tuesday 19th August 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
More from the Star Wars spoiler machine. Producer Rick McCallum has revealed
that the film's resident baddie wields two light sabres and that we will see
how Darth Vader gets his name and what it means. Meanwhile, Samuel L Jackson
has said he is undergoing tough sword-fighting training as his character
will constantly be on the defensive. Sources on the set have also said that
the major focus of Episode III, which is set three years after Attack of the
Clones, is the breakdown in friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. McCallum
also said that there would be some "glorious death scenes".
At this rate, there won’t be much point in actually seeing the film when it
eventually comes out. Not that the last two were up to much anyway.
Thursday 14th August 2003: Star Wars: Episode III Update:
Peter Mayhew has been chatting about getting back under the skin of
Chewbacca for Star Wars: Episode III. Unlike some of the cast who have
already finished filming, Mayhew has yet to get started. "I just went out
there to do some publicity for it, and they said: 'Right, we'll keep in
touch and let you know when we need you,'" he said. "I talked to George, and
he was pleased to see us out there. When I go back [to actually shoot
Chewbacca scenes] he will be even more pleased, because he'll be one step
closer to getting the movie finished." He added that he has already done
some costume fittings for the role. "Chewie looks exactly the same as he
always has. It was a wonderful feeling for any actor or artist to create
something that looks as good today as it did when i |
