Tuesday
27th April 2004: Fantastic Four Update:
Mark at HNR has just sent in the following filming info for
Fantastic Four "
As reported by HNR’s ASB and confirmed by various HNR
sources around town Fantastic Four is looking like it will shoot
in Vancouver and some additional location photography done in
an East Coast city. It was dicey for a while and we’re
told that Montreal and Toronto were under serious contention
for the full shoot. Still no word on what studio in Vancouver
will be used.
We also
got an interesting email over the weekend from ‘CC’
who said that reps from IATSE and ACFC were told that the film
would not film in town with the reason being “that they
need something as big as NY's Brooklin Bridge to make the final
showdown between the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom. A more
likely scenario for them is to move the interior soundstage
work to Toronto, while some of the essential exterior shoots
will remain in NY. But majority of the work will be in the East
Coast.”
Sounds very
interesting but goes contrary to what we’ve been hearing
from our sources in regards to the Vancouver factor and usually
organizations like IATSE and ACFC are the last to know what
actually is going on. We’ve been hearing that the main
reason some location work would need to done elsewhere like
Toronto or Montreal or even NYC is because a major location
was lacking in Vancouver something that only an East Coast City
has….so maybe it’s the Bridge or maybe its some
other sort of older looking/cobblestone district that fits better
out East….either way we’ll soon find out with the
official announcement expected to come this week or next."

Wednesday
7th April 2004: Fantastic Four Update:
Filmforce
have been in touch with the following scoop
Marvel Studios honcho Avi Arad
recently advised About.com, "We have a director [for
Fantastic Four but] I cannot tell you who he is until
Tuesday. ... We needed for this movie a director
that's a genius with relationships. It's a movie about
relationships."
IGN FilmForce
knows who that "genius" is. We've been
able to confirm that Barbershop director Tim Story has
landed the gig. Story's next release is the
English-language remake of Taxi, starring Queen
Latifah and Jimmy Fallon.
He's also
attached to direct the Chris Rock vehicle
Sick Day for Imagine Entertainment and Universal
Pictures.
We were
also advised that filming begins in August.
Location scouting is underway. Look for casting to
begin soon.
Story's
hiring may be another indication that Fox and
Marvel are intent on making Fantastic Four a comedy.
Previous directors attached to the project were Raja
Gosnell (Scooby Doo) and Peyton Reed (Down with Love).
Actor-filmmaker Sean Astin has also pursued the
directing gig."
Friday
20th February 2004: Fantastic Four Update:
Anon has hust sent in the following "Actor Robert McClure
is no longer being considered for the Fantastic Four Film as
Ben "The Thing" Grimm. No word as to the reason why
or who will be in the front runner's postion now." Does
this news tie in with the rumour that Michael Clarke Duncan
is in talks for the role.
Wednesday
11th February 2004: The Fantastic Four Update:
Avi Arad has been talking to Filmforce about the status of The
Fantastic Four movie "Well, funny that you ask, sitting
here right in front of me is the latest draft, and we're going
to make this movie, and it's going to be great. And everything
that you ever wanted to see in The Fantastic Four, which is
the family dynamics, vis a vis Victor, it's all here. You wanted
to see Alicia and Ben? Why does that make sense? It's here.
Every hot button that the fans, someone like you, will want
to see in this movie, is in there. You want the ancestry? It's
there. The tone? Big action movie. A big action movie dealing
with these characters. They come out of this tragedy, as you
know these superpowers are public, unlike the X-Men who can
hide. And it's not easy. It's not easy for a person to get these
supposed-to-be-superpowers, but they are not. It's not only
for Ben. Obviously Ben is the monster in the group and the most
sensitive, but everybody else, if a woman like Sue materializes,
what does it do to everything else inside her? I don't want
to go too deep and give too much away, but what I'm saying to
you is we're dealing with the vulnerability on one hand, and
then the fun in it."

Thursday 27th November 2003: Fantastic Four Update:
Wayne has been in touch with the following rumour "An actor by the name
of Robert McClure is being considered for the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing for the comic book movie, "The Fantastic Four." I know that he played the part of a "Shaggy Man" in the sci-fi film title, "FreeJack." FreeJack was released about ten years ago and starred Mick Jagger, Emilio Estevez, and Anthony Hopkins. And He worked for a couple seasons on the american hit T.V. series,"In the Heat of the Night." From some of the photos that I've seen, He looks like a combination of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack Nicholson."

in Vancouver in late December 2003 at Mammoth Film Studios in Burnaby a
suburb of Vancouver(the studio where Riddick currently is and X2/Santa

including Sam Hamm, Philip Morton, Michael France and Chris Columbus.
Tuesday 13th May 2003: Fantastic Four Update:
It now looks like the rumours that George Clooney was up for a role in
Fantastic Four have proven to be just that, rumours. Peyton Reed has also
shot down word that the casting had been decided on "there are people that
we are thinking about, just too early" and that they are waiting for the
screenplay to be completed.
Monday 12th May 2003: Fantastic Four Update:
Director Peyton Reed has commented on what tone Fantastic Four might have "I think Mark is a smart writer...I'm not gonna say the tone will be Twin Peaks, and it's not a rollicking comedy. There's 40 years of source material; The Fantastic Four incorporates a lot of different tones, so that's what's great about it and also what's tricky about it"
Thursday 8th May 2003: Fantastic Four Update:

Tuesday 4th February 2003: Fantastic Four Update:
Rumours are circulating that an adaptation of the Marvel comic boom property could be starting production this summer.
Tuesday 5th November 2002: Fantastic Four Update:
Writer Doug Petrie has been spilling his guts on his script for the much troubled Fantastic Four movie "The big reason I got hired was that the scripts that were done before, by pretty big-name guys, were origin stories. [The other scripts] were very big on 'these are astronauts that go to space' for the first, like, half-hour. It was something like 'Armageddon.' I just kept saying it's got to be like 'A Hard Day's Night'. To the world outside, they are the world's coolest superheroes. [But] when they get home, they just fight with each other about everything. They order pizzas and argue about who gets the better costumes and stuff like that. It's a family comedy when they get behind closed doors". Paul Walker, Charlize Theron, John C. Reilly and Alexis Denisof as the team with Jude Law as Dr. Doom are Petrie's dream casting choices for the parts, and Petrie went on to elaborate a lot about the look of Dr. Doom: "He gets screwed out of the superpowers, so he made himself who he is. ... The Marvel guys were very high on showing the actor's face. ... I hope I'm not spilling too many secrets. But I got caught up with how to show his face but keep the scariness of a guy in a mask. I wanted the big reveal to be [that] the mask is a high-tech thing that can separate and retract off his face when he wants it to. You see that he's unbelievably handsome. ... But it doesn't end there. When he's handsome, he's lying. When his real character comes out, his face starts to sag and melt and scarify in this horrible way. And what you learn is that his face got so smashed upon his re-entry - he was one of the original astronauts - he's literally falling apart. And the mask is the only thing keeping him together"
Thursday 31st October 2002: Fantastic Four Update:
Doug Petrie spoke will Dreamwatch magazine about his screenplay for the planned Fantastic Four movie. "The change to the origin story, which came from the earlier drafts and I adopted, is that Doom was like the fifth Beatle. He was on the spaceship with them, and in my version he saw this particle wave coming - they didnt want to say cosmic rays because they felt it sounded fake, but in fact cosmic rays are real. I wanted to do A Perfect Storm in space, where a giant wave is coming towards them, and Victor blasts off in the escape pod, saving his own skin. He crashlands to Earth and becomes Doom because his face is lost in the reentry process, which is horrible and violent, while the four of them get bombaded by these mysterious rays and become the Fantastic Four". These origin scenes will be part of flashbacks though, as the opening is "a giant action sequence where everyone in New York City is watching The Fantastic Four kick the crap out of a giant monster on Fifth Avenue".
Friday 25th October 2002: The Fantastic Four Update:
Chris Columbus has been speaking to The Leaky Cauldron some more about his plans to bring The Fantastic Four to the big screen. "It's difficult to get a studio backing. We're working on it, we're actually doing a rewrite...What makes the Marvel series so wonderful, as Stan Lee used to say in the 60s, these are 'heroes with hang-ups'. And they were heroes with real problems, unlike Superman and Batman at the time. These were real characters, or at least, soap opera characters in comic books. People really related to that. So when you got these comic books, you got soap operas and superhero stories. The Fantastic Four have the same sort of chemistry and character situations that Spider-Man had. And our scripts always reflected -- the first 30-40 pages were always about their character interaction. We don't want to come off as doing exactly what Spider-Man did, so we're working on the script right now".
Tuesday 22nd October 2002: Fantastic Four Update:
Latino Review reports that Chris Columbus will produce the big screen adaptation of the popular Fantastic Four comic book. At the recent Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Sectrets press junket, Columbus commented on the recent Mike Frances draft of the film's screenplay, "...Mike Frances version is a good script. That version unfortunately cost around $700 million dollars! (Laughter) It's difficult to get a studio to back it. We're working on a rewrite of the script".
Wednesday 18th September 2002: Fantastic Four Update:
Writer Michael France has been talking on the script he wrote for Fantastic Four and the abortive attempts to bring them to the screen "The reason is that it's unbelievably expensive, It's probably one of the most expensive comic book movies you can make with special effects shots to portray the characters. Spider-Man, I guess, is only Spider-Man for about 30 percent of the movie, something like that, With Fantastic Four, the Thing is in effect in every shot. Mr. Fantastic is in effect in every shot. Even outside of action sequences, the comedy always revolves around the Thing and the Torch fighting at home, so even the comic relief scenes are, like, a million dollars per minute. The problem they keep running into is that, no matter what you do, it's too expensive, The Hulk is not a cheap movie to make, but all they've got to deal with is one character and a villain. With Fantastic Four, you've got the four of them plus a villain. In my script, the villain was Dr. Doom, so there's a lot of expense in that, too."
5/2/02
BBCi reports that Buffy writer/ director Doug Petrie is working on the Fantastic Four movie adaptation.
This movie has been in development hell for quite a few years, and there is one major reason why it has languished there for so long. Money! A Fantastic Four movie based on one script was budgeted at $280 Million dollars, which is DOUBLE what the most expensive movie ever greenlighted Pearl Harbor was budgeted at.
The movie has had quite a few writers working on it as well. First up to be talked about for the script were Michael France and Chris Columbus. Chris Columbus as I imagine you know is the director of the forthcoming Harry Potter movie. More word on his involvement in this project later.
Word then was that Philip Morton was attached to write a script but things got put on the back burner due to budget problems. Peter Segal was attached as a director for the Fantastic Four movie at that time.
Sam Hamm was then hired to rewrite a screenplay with the main aim of cutting down the budget of the movie. It appeared that he did manage that to a certain extent but not totally. There was apparently one scene in the movie that had Dr. Doom turning into The Statue Of Liberty!
The movie was at 20th Century Fox at this stage. Fox had a deal with Chris Columbus for first look at all his projects. Word then leaked out on the script and it wasn't all that positive. It seemed like things had just been bolted together from the comic book with huge special effects stuck in with no rhyme nor reason.
Around this time Fox's option was nearly running out, they were apparently waiting to see how X Men fared before they greenlighted Fantastic Four, so an extension was bought at that time.
Raja Gosnell was then being talked about to direct the movie, with Chris Columbus producing it for him. At this time Columbus talked a bit about the budgeting problems "Bringing this one to the screen is a budgeting nightmare, one estimate was as high as $280 million US because every time the four characters walk into a scene, it will cost upwards of $100,000. You have four characters who have these intense superpowers. One person is invisible, which is fairly easy to do. But when you combine that with a guy who bursts into flames plus can fly and a guy who can stretch nearly any part of his body nearly a mile and an eight-foot character made out of concrete and rock--well, it gets to be a budgetary nightmare. We're trying to find a way to do it that's not complete animation. It's really daunting. Right now, the budget would be about $280 million. It's prohibitively expensive. We can't make that film. So we continue to tinker with the script to get this movie down to size."
Ralph Winter got attached to the project as a producer around this time as wel, and things looked to be moving again for a Fantastic Four movie. So fast that Avi Arad (in charge of production at Marvel's side) was even talking about release dates "We're aiming for a release date of July 4, 2001. We've got a script and a director in place, and we'll be casting very soon."
But at this point they mahybe didn't have the director totally commited to the project as Raja Gosnell was also being talked about for the Scooby Doo movie. And the observant amongst you will know that he is currently shooting that movie right now.
Budget was then apparently in the £75 million range, which while still being a huge amount of money is a damn sight less than the £280 million first being talked about. The focus of the movie had appeared to have changed a lot as well with talk being more about comedy and sitcom, which is a lot cheaper to shoot than huge special effects.
Alex Ross was being mentioned to do design work for the movie as well. Alex Ross is one of the hottest comic book artists around at the moment, and tends to specialise in photo realistic artwork.
Rumours then went back to a director for the Fantastic Four project with Bring It On director Peyton Reed being talked about. It was thought that a new writer would then be attached to the project to reflect what Peyton Reed wished to bring to the project.
