15th March 2004: Friday Night Lights Update:
Michael has been in touch with his experiences of being an extra
on the recent Friday Night Lights filming "There has been
a lot of unusual weather for Odessa, so filming hasn't been
going as smoothly as expected.
The first two days were downright miserable at Ratliff Stadium,
with fog, drizzle, and lots of wind. It's really difficult to
shoot "The first practice" which also supposedly coincides
with the hottest day of the year, when everybody is wearing
heavy coats and it is foggy. So we shot the third practice on
the first day instead, and went back to the first practice later.
Several scenes were shot at other local venues, and parking
lot scenes outside the stadium were also filmed, including the
final scene (I won't reveal how it ends ;-) ). Despite the weather,
it was fun to watch Billy Bob Thornton playing a little football
with Tim McGraw on the field.
Yesterday we moved to the new football stadium in Midland where
Second Unit was shooting scenes on the field in the rain, and
First Unit (where I fortunately ended up) was shooting a couple
of scenes in the locker room at the Astrodome. It was certainly
an enjoyable day, working in close quarters with Billy Bob Thornton
(Coach Gary Gaines), Jay Hernandez (Brian Chavez), Derek Luke
(Boobie Miles), Lucas Black (QB Mike Winchell), Garrett Hedlund
(Don Billingsley), Lee Thompson Young (Chris Comer), Lee Jackson
(Ivory Christian), and Director Peter Berg. And (if the scene
doesn't end up on the cutting room floor) you will also see
the real Boobie Miles standing in as a Permian coach right next
to Derek Luke playing his role.
Next week they will be moving on to shoot the games. Filming
sessions will be all night long under the stadium lights. I
understand the plan is to film in Odessa through March 23, 2004,
then on to Houston for filming in the Astrodome."
