Gangs Of New York's release has been
pushed back yet again, to Christmas 2002, a full twelve month's
after its original release date. Variety
report that Martin Scorsese has managed to cut the film down
to a tidy two hours and forty minutes. The film originally
had a six hour running time. The UK release date is still
unknown, but will probably be in january or February of next
year.
18/3/02
Miramax Films has trimmed about 15%
of its publicity work force which has resulted in Gangs Of
New York's release being delayed once again. The Scorsese
film will now reach US theaters in the last quarter of 2002,
almost a year after its initial release date. Sigh........

Production started on August 30th, 2000 at the Cinecitta studios
in Rome, where the New York City of the mid-19th century is
being reconstructed (filming won't be done in modern New York
since it doesn't look like that anymore). At $90 million,
this is Miramax's most expensive production ever. Robert
De Niro was originally supposed to play the part of Billy
the Butcher but opted out. It was then announced that Willem
Dafoe would play the part but the role ended up going to Daniel
Day-Lewis.
| Miramax
have settled upon December 21st as the releasedate for
Gangs Of New York, this puts the film up against The Majestic
and Lord Of The Rings. An incredibly brave move, but with
DiCaprio's pulling power and the probablity that movie
goers will want something else to watch over that weekend,
may see the film right. In any case, it's a Scorsese film,
and when did any of his movies make big box office? People
and true cinema fans will see this movie anyway. |
