Thursday 19th February 2004: Hellboy Update:
As the fight against online film piracy gains momentum all over the world with constant warning adverts and police and governmental crackdowns, the main contributors are continuing to fuel the fire. And who are the main contributors to film piracy you may ask? The Movie Studios themselves.

As the industry continues to print the total loses they are suffering from loss of earnings through piracy, both their distributors and the companies themselves are creating demand for illegal copies and grey imports and Hellboy is an example of what they are doing wrong.

This is a movie that is creating a lot of possitive buzz on the Internet as comic book and action fans are clambering to see the latest superhero to hit the silver screen. The movie opens in the US on 2nd April but here lies the problem, it opens in the UK in September, almost six months later! The big question is why?

A movie that looks like it is going to be a smash hit when released in the US is only going to create a lot of positive word of mouth and a wiliness for people to see it. So why such a long wait? You can understand that this is a the first movie of a possible franchise and the studio do not know whether it is going to be a success but this does not justify a six month wait. You also have to ask that if the studio heads or distributors have seen the movie and they think it isn't any good.

What ever the reason this is still promoting piracy. It is more than likely that the US DVD will be on sale by the time Hellboy is released in UK cinemas, so people will be able to either import it or get hold of a perfect copy. A similar situation happened in 2003 with Finding Nemo (released in May in the US and in October in UK), leading to Disney rethinking there release schedule.

This problem of release dates needs to be addressed quickly because if not the studios themselves with be the cause of their own downfall.

Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro has been talking about the movie. Commenting on the character, he said that he's "a regular Joe, a blue collar guy. He comes with a monkey wrench and a bunch of tools and says, 'where's the leak.'" As for the story, del Toro added that Hellboy is "a guy learning to be a man, even though he was born a demon." Del Toro not only wrote and directed, he's also providing voices for the film. He's voicing Baby Hellboy, Kroenen and the monster Samuel. But will there be a sequel? "If we come up with a great idea, then yes. If there is a second one, it should explore a different side of Hellboy."

Doug Jones who plays Abe Sapien has been talking in a very positive light
of making Helboy, surprising considering he had to spend a massive seven
hours in make up each day"When you've already put in a seven hour day and
then your twelve hour shooting day starts, that makes for a long reeeally
really tiring thing. So I had to push through a lot of pain and discomfort
to get to the character of Abe. But once I got there and the cameras were
rolling, it was so worth it. Because I honestly and absolutely love this
character. I love playing him, I love his relationships with everyone else
in the film. I love him...I would be very interested in reprising the role
for a sequel! It has not been talked about 'contractually', and so I'm
pretty open to discussion when the time comes, yes".

As for the music: "I am hoping to lock the composer in the next three to four weeks. The soundtrack is in discussion and I would love for it to have a lot of Tom Waits, that's for sure". Tuesday 21st January 2003: Hellboy Update:
Selma Blair has been talking about the soon to be filming Hellboy "It is the greatest gift. And such a departure for me, hat someone would see me in something other than some bubbling imitation of a country club girl. So when Guillermo Del Toro called me, my smile did not go away for weeks. My character is not so much an ass kicker. That is more Hellboy’s thing, while my character is much more a mental athlete in my telepathic fire starting. I am a girl that is trying to come to grips with this kind of tragic power she has because I killed my entire family when I was a little girl with this power, so it is something I am running from my whole life and try not to admit to myself that I have. However, you cannot run from what you have for too long. Is she going to be a regular girl that’s struggling? Is she wearing someone else’s wardrobe? Little things are getting me stumped, because it is really strange having the say-so, to have the lead role when I can create this girl. I don’t have to go by someone else’s boundaries of how to protect our leading girl or something. So it is pretty amazing that I can flip around in my head a million ways [issues such as] where do I want her clothes to come from? She’s in a mental hospital. Am I going to steal them? Am I going to sew them? Am I going to buy them at the first store I go into? I have so many choices. When I first was offered this part, I immediately did my research. I would do anything for Guillermo. He has a vision, and he wrote this and directed this, and he’s very careful about who he’s casting. And I really consider him an artist, and ... something I want to do now is really be careful about the directors I’m working with. It’s time to raise the stakes."

Monday 20th January 2003: Hellboy Update:
It has been announced that Ronnie Yeskel Casting will complete the casting for Hellboy that will start filming in Prague this March, roles they will be casting BPRD agents, 30s to 50s, men and women, sharp, consevative and fit, any ethinicity.

Thursday 12th December 2002:Hellboy Update:
Ron Perlman has been talking about the makeup he has to wear for the soon to film Hellboy movie "It's incredibly beautiful: liquid, vulnerable and fierce, very much in keeping with the comic book character, unlike anything else where you're basically covered in latex and foam." He also atlked about the research he has done for the role " trying to get into the point of view and the world as one would always do when one is asked to."

Tuesday 10th December 2002: Hellboy Update:
Ron Perlman has confirmed that Hellboy is prepped and ready to start filming "We're about to start production in February in Prague"

Wednesday 4th December 2002: Hellboy Update:
Mike Mignola has been letting slip some information about the upcoming Hellboy movie "Well, you know, I know less than most. I was out there for two and a half months this summer and I did a bunch of conceptual stuff and I worked on the script. I saw it go from just the script to what's starting to look like a movie. I haven't been directly involved in a while now. I hear reports of what's going on, and I hear things are going very, very smoothly. And through people involved... I thought when I came back from LA I'd go crazy because I wouldn't know what was going on. To be so intimately involved -- seven days a week, we were working on the movie, most of the time directly with Guillermo del Toro so it was great, it was very hands-on. Suddenly I leave LA and I'm completely out of the loop. I didn't go crazy. And I realized I didn't go crazy because I knew all the right people were involved. I spent enough time around all these people to realize everybody got it. Everybody was on the same page with what they were doing and I am very content to sit back and let the people who know how to make a movie make this movie. I don't think I will be involved again until they start filming and then I will go over there."

Wednesday 4th December 2002: Hellboy Update:
Guillermo Del Toro has signed up Selma Blair it has been confirmed, to star in the upcoming Hellboy movie. She will play Hellboy's love interest who can control fire.

Saturday 12th October 2002: Hellboy Update:
Ty Ruben Ellingson who is providing the conceptual design work on Hellboy has been talking about how he wants things to look "...There’s a Nazi kind of hybrid technology that’s very authentic to the time-frame, in that the machines and mechanisms seem authentic to World War II, but they’re kind of fantastic in the sense of what they do. Now my sensibility is not really a fantastical sensibility.I bring kind of that sensibility to that Nazi technology that I wanted it to seem authentic, like if you saw it in a museum, you’d go ‘I totally believe that that exists’. You wouldn’t be shocked."

Monday 20th September 2002: Hellboy Update:
Director Guillermo Del Toro has been talking about the upcoimg Hellboy comic book adaptation he has been working on "It's not one of these movies where you're going to argue about the web spinners being organic or mechanical, I think 99% of people like Hellboy for the same reason. Everyone just really responds to the characters and the mood that Mike [Mignola] creates." He has also been talking about the character Abe Sapien that may have his voice added in post by a name such as Kevin Spacey or Steve Buscemi. The design of the character is by Jose Fernandez. Rick Baker is designing Hellboy himself and Ron Perlman will be testing out the look of Hellboy soon.

Wednesday 28th August 2002 : Hellboy Update:
Ron Perlman has revealed how he will approach the part of Hellboy in the upcoming movie of the same name. Instead of doing a lot of reading and learning his lines, Perlman will approach the role fresh on each day of filming. His performance will come 'from the heart', he says in a new video clip posted on Hellboy's official website. The film will be directed by Guillermo del Toro (Blade 2, Mimic).

3rd May 2002 - Hellboy Updated
Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro has been chatting to Countingdown.com about the proposed film from Revolution Studios and its similarities to the other comic book adaptations in production..

"If Hellboy was selling as much copies as Spider-Man, or Daredevil, it’d be a $90 million movie," del Toro told Countingdown. "But since it’s a very acquired taste, and it’s kind of a cult comic book, we are given $60 million, but we’re given $60 million with the right actor. Which is much better than telling the fans we’re gonna get $90 million and Tom Cruise is gonna play Hellboy."

Del Toro also talked about what Hellboy would look like in the movie,

"[asked whether Hellboy is to be approximately 650 lbs…like a gorilla] This is one of the things that unfortunately, we couldn’t do on the movie if we wanted to make it for $60 million…if we had had the budget that I originally proposed, which was $75 Million, that was one of the things we wanted to do. I wanted to have, basically, a smaller Mighty Joe Young. But the way we have it, he’s gonna have to be 6’5 or so. And as for his weight, well, that stone hand is very heavy (laughs)"
.

24/4/02

Variety today confirmed a rumour that was first posted over at Aint It Cool News, that Hellboy has bee greenlit with a budget of around $60 million. At the helm is Blade 2 director Guillermo Del Toro with Ron Perlman in the lead role. Shooting will begin in January 2003 with Del Toro returning to Prague, where most of Blade 2 was filmed. Here's the variety article that confirmed the rumour.

"In the comic by Mike Mignola, Hellboy was hatched by occult-obsessed Nazis who planned to unleash a hellacious weapon on their enemies. The Nazis were thwarted, and the resulting being has become a force for good, an investigator for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development who regularly finds himself battling werewolves, vampires and other unsavory foes".

"The picture has originally set up at Universal, which cooled on the project when hopes of enlisting its "The Fast and the Furious" and "Pitch Black" star Vin Diesel were dashed".

"But del Toro has plenty of momentum himself after "Blade II" grossed $32.5 million in its first weekend last month. Studios all over Hollywood offered him projects. While DreamWorks quickly set up an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountain of Madness," and Fox and James Cameron's Lightstorm are developing the horror film "Coffin" for del Toro to direct, the filmmaker wanted his next film to be "Hellboy," come hell or high water".

Previous Updates: This is a project that has been in various stages of development for at least three years. But things are starting to move again with word that Vin Diesel is maybe interested in starring in it.

Hellboy is a comic book character created by Mike Mignola that was foirst of all rumoured to be in development over at Universal Pictures , Mike Mignola was asked about it "They want to make a movie, and we're in discussion with Universal, but for right now, its just at the talking stage." Larry Gordon was thought to be producing alongside Mike Richardson for Dark Horse comics (who published the comic).

Pete Briggs was hired to write a script and from what was said at the time he did work closely with Mignola so that the script did reflect the comic book as far as possible. Briggs had this to say about his involvement with Mignola "Mike may have got a tad bit irritated at me calling him Transatlantic persistently to ask him trivial questions.Point in case - I was writing a scene in a bar, and wanted to know what Hellboy's favourite drink would be. So, I called Mike to ask him. 'A seven-and-seven' was the weary reply." Mignola seemed to like what Briggs had done as well "From what I've seen, it's really faithful to the comic without being a straight adaptation of one mini-series."

But from other comments that Mignola made at the time he wasn't getting that excited about a movie getting made "Ninety percent of this stuff never gets made, and when the stuff gets made, it changes radically. Should we defy all the odds and get the movie made, it could still wind up radically different from where it is now."

Word then came in that director Guillermo Del Toro was interested in the Hellboy movie and had been talking to Mike Mignola about it and they decided that they wanted Ron Perlman to play Hellboy in a suit. Other names they thought about included Crispin Glover and Jean Reno.

At this point much talk went back to the script and it appeared that Pete Briggs script had been jettsioned in favour of one by Guillermo Del Toro himself. Del Toro gave his reasons for this "I can humbly say that I care deeply about this movie. As deeply as any person that has ever been creatively involved with the character has been. This is not a power play as I don't consider myself a Hollywood power 'player'. I am quite simply in love. Not lust, for lust is power struggle. Love. I will make my every effort to turn this into the best Hellboy movie 'I' can. Not that 'anyone' can. I will give it my best and work and sweat every ounce of strength out of my chubby fanboy body to care for the big red guy in the way 'I' feel he deserves. The new script is much more dark, possibly more somber and less action oriented, much more character centered and very different in style and approach. Also, aside from the 'prologue' it creates a fresh storyline than that of the comics, but I plan to capture pitch-perfect the tone and the iconography and the spirit of Mignola. I said to Mike the following in our first meeting: If I am a fan, I like to see my favorite images and my favorite character trademarks but I don't need a verbatim translation of the piece."

Word then came in from anther producer attached to the project Lloyd Levin and he gave positive word on the screenplay "I think it's very, very faithful to the Mignola books. I think if you're familiar with the Hellboy comic books and Mignola's work, you'll be extremely pleased with what Guillermo has done. If that's what you're expecting, that's what you'll get on screen."

But this didn't mean that Hellboy was about to be made as Guillermo Del Toro had quite a few projects up in the air as well including The Count of Monte Cristo and another project he talked about "There is a project I might do before Hellboy. It's a movie set in Spain and slated to be co-produced with Pedro Almodovar's company. It's a horror story that I wrote along with two Spanish writers. We'll know more in the next few weeks."

Mike Mignola then lit slip a ton of info about the troubles that Hellboy was having getting made "We've thirty-two different screenplays by the director. We had a studio, we didn't have a studio, we had a studio, we didn't have a studio. Universal passed and then Universal came back and then Universal passed and then Universal came back. The last I heard, at one point not so long ago New Line was saying we'll do it for $40 million. But the director's version of the movie was budgeted for $60 million. And then for a while I think I heard it was back at Universal. It's at that weird stage where it takes a whim on somebody's part to greenlight the movie. It could be greenlit any day, but what would have to happen is that someone out there would has to make a movie almost exactly like it and makes a lot of money, will say, 'Hey, we've got one of those!"

Word then came in that Del Toro was planning on doing Hellboy after he had completed another movie, once again it was Mignola that had the word "As it stands now, del Toro is hoping to do Hellboy after Blade 2,"He needs a big-hit, commercial action movie to get the juice in Hollywood."

That is pretty much as far as things got but this year things got going again with the rumour that Vin Diesel, whose star is very much on the rise was interested in the project, but as has been the case for this project , first he wasn't then he was. He announced that he wasn't involved in the project at all. But the latest word is that he hasn't even sat down with the producers to see if he will take the role or not. So its all to play for.
