Monday 2nd June 2003: Hidalgo Update: Just received the following email.
Read it and make up your own mind. "The Walt Disney Studio is widely
publicising its forthcoming movie, 'Hidalgo,' as "based on the true story
of Frank Hopkins, the greatest long-distance rider of all time."
The Long Riders' Guild is writing to let you know that the film is actually based
on a tissue of lies. If he can be believed, Frank Hopkins had more adventures
and met more famous people than anyone else in American history. He claimed to
have won more than 400 endurance races, been a US army dispatch rider, a buffalo
hunter, the star of the Wild West Show, to have taught frontier lore to Billy
the Kid, and to have won a 3,000 mile horse race across Arabia on his mustang
stallion, "Hidalgo." In addition, Hopkins claimed to have been friends
with Teddy Roosevelt, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Crazy Horse and Queen
Victoria, to name but a few. Sixty academics, researchers, librarians,
genealogists, authors, and experts assisted The Long Riders' Guild in an unparallelled
international equestrian research project which has proved that nothing Frank
Hopkins said can be verified. Frank Hopkins has thus been shown to be wearing
the double crown of the biggest equestrian hoaxer, as well the biggest Old West
liar, of all time. However Nina Heyn, Disney's Executive Director of
International Publicity, is defending the $80 million movie, which stars Viggo
Mortensen. Speaking to a British journalist, Heyn said, "No one here really
cares about the historical aspects. Once a picture has been shot, people move
on to others. We're like a factory. Its like making dolls. Once the latest doll
is out we go onto the next one. if it transpires that the historical aspects are
in question I don't think people would care that much. The Long Riders'
Guild would like to invite you to learn the truth about Frank Hopkins by visiting
our website, www.thelongridersguild.com. From the home page, please click on "The
Hopkins Hoax." Sincerely The Long Riders' Guild

Tuesday 27th May 2003: Hidalgo Update: Viggo
Mortensen has been talking about his upcoming film Hidalgo. Based on a true
story, he plays the lead role of cowboy Frank T. Hopkins, a mustang rider
who in 1890 became the first American to compete in the Ocean of Fire, a
3,000-mile race across the Arabian Desert. "The race isn't so much about
whether he finishes or how well he does," says Mortensen. "It's
about what happens to him and the horse, to their relationship, what they
have to overcome, and what he has to learn about himself." A picture
of the actor taken on the set in Morocco has also appeared online, which
can be viewed by clicking
here.

Thursday 8th May 2003: Hidalgo Update: Rumours are circulating that
Hidalgo has undergone a name change to Into The Fire. This was based on the name
the movie was called at a test screening, it's notorious for films to have code
names for test screenings, is this one of those occassions?

Tuesday 29th April 2003: Hidalgo Update: Just received the following report
and images on Hidalgo. Thanks to Gary! " The filming here was done in
late October of 2002, it was shot down on the Wild Horse Sanctuary near Hot Springs
SD. We spent 5 days shooting in this location due to it being an area that closely
matched the original location of the Wounded Knee Massacre....we were shooting
a re-enactment as part of the film.....The director Joe Johnston was wonderful
to work with.....John Fusco wrote a great story. Viggo was a lot of fun to work
with and it was an honor to be able to meet him....the days were very long spending
on average of 13-15 hours a day on set... I was one of the extras that was in
the 7th Cavalry for the movie."
this
is a pic from the filming where Viggo's character is trying to warn the people
of the village what is going to happen CLICK EACH PIC FOR A LARGER VERSION!
this
is a pic of when Viggo and John Fusco are being adopted into the Sioux Nation
for their contrabution in trying to bring a realistic look to how the Wounded
Knee Massacre affected Viggo's character in the movie
this is a
pic of a few of us with Viggo....I am on the far left in the picture.....Viggo
was so down to earth and one of the most friendly actor's I have ever met....

Wednesday 12th March 2003: Hidalgo Update: Just received the following
set report from Hidalgo "We just finished filming about two weeks ago. It
was the end of the movie over at Guadalupe Beach in Central California. We were
on set for three days. The first day rain so we didn't film. But the next two
days we worked fourteen hour days. We were supposed to match the extras that filmed
over in Morocco. Viggo was also working those days. There were three other main
characters. One who played Joseph, and a really tiny dude from Kenya, and the
camel boy." Thanks to KGhengis!
 Tuesday
4th March 2003: Hidalgo Update: Have received the following information
on the filming of Hidalgo "There's a sign on HWY 395 south out of Ridgecrest,
CA that reads, "Hidalgo". Highway patrol are watching traffic both ways
at turn off in Atolia east to Cuddeback dry lake. Lots of traffic last week and
more this week. Looks like their definetely filming there just now" Thanks
to Anon!

'Thanks to LT'. Sunday
24th November 2002: Hidalgo Update: Lurking at the bottom of my inbox
today was an email from a scooper named 'Dave' who claims that he was an extra
on the set of Hidalgo. He took the picture below of Viggo Mortensen on set next
to his horse. Check it out. Thanks
go out to Dave for the image. Monday
11th November 2002: Hidalgo Update: "I have just been asked to
be an extra in the Hidalgo movie as a calvaryman (civilwar era) in Custer, South
Dakota. They will be shooting November 18th, 19th and 20th and will have about
300 calvary" . Thanks to Trent. Also had this one sent in, "I
live up the street from the set in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and pass by it a few
times each week. I've been monitoring the progress of the constructionof the set
since summer, going from tent to teepees to sailing ship and stone castle. Today,
the parking lot was filled with trailers/rv's and a horse trailer. There was a
Union Jack flying above the stone castle in the afternoon. My wife said this morning,
they had a very bright light on a crane high up in the air. The signs marking
the set location are usually encoded. Only once did it say "Hidalgo."
Thanks to James. Then there's this bit of info from Brian,"I'm not
sure if you already know this or not but they're doing a reenactment of the Battle
at Wounded Knee here in South Dakota for the Hidalgo movie. I've been cast as
one of the cavalry men to help with the shoot. There will be about 300-350 of
us in the cavalry and a number of Native American men, women, and children involved
in the battle. The shooting will take place in the Black Hills about 60 miles
south of MT Rushmore. The Battle of Wounded Knee was, for all intensive purposes,
a total embarrassment for the US Army so it will be interesting to see how they
shoot the scene". Friday
4th October 2002: Hidalgo Update: Disney are planning to release Hidalgo
in August 2003. Monday 2nd September 2002: Hidalgo Update:
An anonymous scooper sent us in some more information on Hidalgo. 'The referred
to shoot at the former Marineland is the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show",
which wrapped in Palos Verdes on August 23. The crew then traveled to St. Mary,
Montana to shoot the dramatic release of 500 horses (to be CGI enhanced to 1,000
horses). The Montana shoot ended August 30. On August 31, the company will move
to Morocco to shoot for 2 months of desert scenes, followed in early-November
with "Winter" scenes in the Dakotas. Shooting wraps December 21, 2002.
Omar Sharif is cast as Shied Rashid. Other actors include J.K. Simmons (as Buffalo
Bob)'. 13th August
2002: Hidalgo Update: I've recieved information
from various sources about where they're shooting. The first is from Marcy, 'I
live in Rancho Palos Verdes. It looks like there is a set for the movie being
assembled here on a cliff edge. There are lots of tents with American flags, what
looks like a racing arena with bleachers, some teepees (yes, just like American
Indian teepees) and three huge white balls suspended in the air (??). There is
a sign on the entrance to the area where the set has been assembled saying Hidalgo'.
And this from a scooper named Lucy, 'There is a huge boat that
was built as well as quite a few Teepees. The teepees are very large and they
are using up all the space on the entire lot and there is quite a lot of tight
security'. Thanks to Marcy and Lucy. And there' more.....
'The Hidalgo production team is filming at the old Marineland location on the
Palos Verdes penninsula near L.A. Yesterday I saw large sets that include
the building of the front 1/3 of a black hulled ocean liner with rigging,
and what looks like a Victorian train station and a Victorian city street
scene. Many extras were to come in that night to popluate the set in
costume. I was impressed at the size of the sets, The ship was full size and
the street building facades were up to four stories tall'. Thanks to D.S.
And 'res0sow' hits us with some plot details and a casting rumour,
'Hidalgo is the story of Frank T. Hopkins, the only American cowboy to win
the grueling 3000 mile "Ocean of Fire" race across the African desert
in 1890. Filming commenced on 8/5 and is budgeted at $80 million. It also stars
Omar Sharif'. 12th June 2002: Hidalgo
Update: Zuleikha Robinson (Timecode) has
joined the cast of Joe Johnston's Hidalgo. Coming
Soon report that Robinson will play Jazira, the daughter of an Arabian sheik,
who risks her life to help Mortensen's character win the race.
9/5/02 Hidalgo is based on the
true story of Frank T. Hopkins, a courier who travels to Saudi Arabia with his
horse, Hidalgo, to compete in a race, for a huge prize. Upcoming
Movies say that [the film is] "an adventure that sends the pair around
the world"... Viggo Mortensen (Lord Of The Rings) has been cast
in the role of Hopkins, but no other actors have been attached to the project
as yet. Touchstone have greenlit the project with a budget of around $50 million,
and Hidalgo looks like it will go into production this summer with a release in
the summer of 2003. More
