Tuesday 2nd September 2003: Imagining Argentina Update:
A defiant Emma Thompson has laughed off fierce criticism of her comeback
film, Imagining Argentina, after it was booed and jeered at the Venice film
festival. The film is set during the seven-year reign of terror in which
30,000 people “disappeared” at the hands of the Argentinean military junta.
It took British writer-director Christopher Hampton 14 years to make. For
Oscar-winner Thompson, it was her first film after a two-year break spent
bringing up her daughter. Some critics wept when the journalist she played
was tortured by death squads. But others laughed wildly through the scenes,
which could spell disaster for the project. Thompson was visibly upset when
the news conference was brought to an abrupt end. She said: "There are still
things we should talk about... I know so many people who have actually been
through this, some of our crew lived through it." Most of the criticism was
aimed at Hampton for his decision to shoot the film in English.

My role is about a guy, Victor Madrid, who was captured by the military and my mother asked Carlos Rueda - Where I am. At that moment my scenes star to roll showing what had happened.
