Thursday
21st October 2004: Jarhead update:
Jamie Foxx, Lucas Black, Laz Alonso, Brian Geraghty, Jacob Vargas
and Evan Jones have joined Jake Gyllenhaal in the Sam Mendes
adaptation of Jarhead. The drama is based on Anthony Swofford's
Persian Gulf War memoir. Drawing on his own experiences as a
Marine grunt in Vietnam, Broyles wrote a script that studio
and producers felt captured Swofford's voice and vivid descriptions
of war. The film will start production in early December, with
shooting to take place in Los Angeles and El Centro, Calif.,
the latter doubling for Saudi Arabia. The actors are expected
to undergo boot camp training in November. September 30, 2005
is the expected release date.
Friday
3rd September 2004: Jarhead Update:
At last night's UK premiere for Collateral Empireonline took
the opportunity to ask Jamie Foxx about the movie he is starring
for Sam Mendes called Jarhead. He will play Sgt. Siek alongside
Jake Gyllenhaal in a platoon of American soldiers and their
treacherous trek through Saudi desert in the original Gulf War
in 1990. "It's controversial, but it's kinda like what
we know. In America we know that bad things are going on but
we choose sometimes, in a sense, to overlook them. But now,
with all the things that are going on, we're going to get down
to the nitty-gritty of it. So this movie is very important.
Sam Mendes is a great, great director. It's a very, very eloquent
script. It's going to blow your socks off."
Monday
26th April 2004: Jarhead Update:
Universal has signed up Sam Mendes to direct Jarhead. The script
has been written by William Broyles based on the memoirs of
Gul War veteran Anthony Swofford. The movie will follow Swofford's
experiences during the Gulf War. "This is equal parts black
humor, honesty, rage, lyricism, profanity and the mixture of
machismo jarhead culture. With the exception of 'Three Kings,'
this is a war that has been overlooked but which has a burning
relevance to what is happening right now in the Middle East,"
Mendes said.
