Austin Powers meets Mr. Bean?

Now I personally can't wait for this movie, cause it's going to go one way or the other. Either this is going to launch a fantastic (British) franchise featuring one of this countries best actors/ comedians, or it's gonna fall flat on its arse. I'm betting on the former. Spy spoof Johnny English sees Rowan Atkinson in the title role, which is based on the character that he played in those Barclaycard ads from a couple of years ago. Here, Johnny English gets his first big screen outing teaming up alongside Natalie Imbruglia and another of Britain's comedy talents Ben Miller. Oh, and a certain John Malkovich pops up in the film too. Which, lets face it, is never a bad thing.

Now, here's our man London Boy with an early review of the movie. BEWARE as there are some potential spoilers ahead.

Managed to get a few tickets for a prerelease version of Johnny English
(Rowan Atkinson) last night at my local UGC in London. We were told of the
usual (try to ignore the editing, or rather the lack of it ) so I will try
to be as fair as I can.

As you all might know Johnny English is a bumbling fool who by accident
becomes the only man left (and his sidekick) to solve the theft of the Crown Jewels. It all involves Sauvage's plans (played BRILLIANTLY by John Malkovich) to become crowned King of England so he can rule the land and turn it into (spoiler ahead) a huge prison for the world's scum, in order to rid the world of overcrowded prisons (and in return make a hefty profit!)

The film itself is a goofy mix of Austin Power's James Bond parody and Mr
Bean. Rowan Atkinson plays the spy that gets everything wrong and generally
makes a fool of himself and the organisation he works for. He is helped along by his sidekick Bough (played by Henry Naylor ) who inevitably is a much better spy then Johnny is but is a loyal and respectful partner.

Natalie Imbruglia plays the female spy who eventually wants Johnny to help
her avoid catastrophe and together they save the day. With a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. There are some hilarious scenes throughout the film with Rowan Atkinson playing the goofy spy brilliantly, using his Mr Bean persona to his advantage and it seems to work very well for this picture. John Malkovich plays the wealthy villainous businessman with a very strong but amusing French accent wonderfully and English people especially will love his use of typically English expressions said in this way. "Bugger ueeeff!!!"
Action scenes were present but not enough for my fancy, but then again you
could argue this film wasn't meant to fit into that genre so that can be forgiven. There is a good chase scene in the middle of the film involving Johhny English in his Aston Martin hanging off a tow truck following a Herz, and the final scene where Natalie Imbruglia kicks a guy's ass (which wasn't all that spectacular to be honest) but that is about it.

Weaker scenes that really put me off recommending people to go see this in
the cinema was the introduction, the first 1 minute or so when we see an agent make his way into Sauvage's mansion, but gets spotted and is about to get shot at from all sides by spear guns. He looks towards the camera with a stunned look and with a horribly put on English accent exclaims "bugger" to which we cut to outside the mansion and hear the spears dart out of the walls killing the agent. It completely ruined the first part of the film and made me cringe in my seat in agony as I thought to myself I hope the rest of the film wasn't going to be this atrocious. And it wasn't. There were loads of great gags and everyone in the theatre was laughing throughout the film. Obviously I saw a version in progress so I could still see some wires and glitchy editing but I overlooked that and in the end was pleased with the result. I hope some work is done in the editing room though as I did feel some parts of the film were slow, especially leading from one scene to the other.

But my suggestion is go see it if you like Austin Powers and especially go see it if you love Mr Bean. With a gun. And Natalie Imbruglia.

Hope you appreciate the input,
