Kabuki
is a comic book created by David Mack and in the sixth issue
of the comic he announced that he had doen a deal with Fox
"I have just closed a deal on the Kabuki Film with a
major studio (the same people that brought you Star Wars)."
Don't know why he didn't just say Fox! He also indicated that
he was involved with developing the movie and the screenplay.
It
turned out the deal for Kabuki was actually over at Fox Animation
to turn Kabuki into an animated movie. David Mack commented
on this as well "Everything is looking very good right
now, and, hopefully, we should have everything worked out
within a couple of weeks. What we've been discussing would
have me writing at least the first draft of the screenplay
and then taking some producer or advisory capacity to maintain
some level of input and creative control." He also indicated
that the movie would amalgamate the two books Kabuki: Circle
Of Blood and Skin Deep.
David
Mack seemed to be very pleased at having the project over
at Fox and he had this to say about that "I'm really
excited about the possibilities for the project -- I recently
saw Fox's first animated feature, Anastasia, and really enjoyed
it. Fox seems to be very concerned about the quality of their
projects as well as making sure they're not just putting out
knock-offs of Disney movies, which Kabuki most certainly will
not be." He also commented on why Kabuki was going to
be an animated movie instead of a live action one "When
I first thought about it, I saw it as live-action, no doubt.
I had signed an option with a live-action team a couple of
years ago, and there's just so many control issues in terms
of there are so many other people involved. In animation,
it's so much simpler and it can be a lot closer to what I've
done. Not only that, it can be a lot closer to what the comic
book does. It's sort of surreal at times, it pushes the envelope.
And they can make every bit of money they put in on it show
on the screen."
And
then things went quiet on this project for a while and the
rights that Fox had taken up lapsed, luckily Fox decided to
take them up again and David Mack had this to say about that
"Fox had previously bought an eighteen month option from
me. That means that for that period of time, they have the
exclusive right to develop Kabuki into a film. And we have
been doing just that for the last year and a half, the news
is that the option time period just expired, and they have
renewed the option by buying another 12 months of exclusive
rights to develop the film, this is good news because options
don't often get renewed. Often, if things aren't completed
in the first option period, the studio drops the project."
Rumours
then circulated that John Sayles (Lone Star) was involved
in the project, David Mack was more reticent about saying
anything for that "Due to confidentiality clauses I'm
not sure I could comment on his involvement or the Kabuki
film stuff that has happened so far. But I'm fascinated that
he mentioned it to you."
And
that is what we know so far. So the rights got renewed which
is a good sign, but no word of a finished script yet, so I
guess we have to wait for word of that.
