The shock news that Howard Shore has left the production of King Kong and the score will now be done by James Newton Howard. And if this doesn't get you worried when the movie comes out in just EIGHT weeks, then I'd be very surprised! Peter Jackson made an announcement about the news "I have greatly enjoyed my collaborations with Howard Shore, whose musical themes made immeasurable contributions to 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. During the last few weeks, Howard and I came to realize that we had differing creative aspirations for the score of 'King Kong.' Rather than waste time arguing with a friend and trying to unify our points of view, we decided amicably to let another composer score the film. I'm looking forward to working with James Newton Howard, a composer whose work I've long admired, and I thank Howard Shore, whose talent is surpassed only by his graciousness."

The hype looks ready to really get rolling on King Kong with the news that Universal flew 200 film distributors from all round the world to watch the first screening of King Kong! Now that doesn't mean the movie is finished by any means, no it looks more like they are going to work hard to get them behind the movie so that it's a massive box office success. Peter Jackson had this to say about the news "We are still filming it. The film's coming out in December and believe me, there's a huge amount of work still to be done." Naturally none of them were/are allowed to talk about what they say in any shape or form whatsoever so get any thoughts you may have of phoning up for local feal pit for gossip out of your mind!

The first production diary of 2005 gets us knee deep into the
NYC set! The extras walk the streets, steam flows out of the
sewers; the depression is in full swing! Grant Major and Peter
Jackson show every corner and alley of the set, including some
of the work that is still ongoing, even with the cameras rolling
elsewhere. We get to see some 'mood scenes' being shot, including

Tuesday
27th April 2004: King Kong Update:
Peter Jackson has revealed some more info on King Kong "We
are not reinventing it. Our story follows the same structure.
It satrts in New York, goes to Skull Island, and there's dinosaurs
on the island. Then it comes back to New York and there's the
Empire State Building and the biplanes and the whole thing."
He says that one thing they're trying to do that the original
didn't is to make it more "emotionally truthful. I put
that ahead of anything else, including technology and the realism
of the effects. Everybody's image of 'King Kong' is that it's
this amazing beauty-and-the-beast love story. And when you look
at the original film, there is as sense that Kong is feeling
an attraction toward Ann-probably the first empathy he's felt
in his life toward another living creature. But Ann is not giving
him a thing. She just looks at him as an object of horror the
entire time. She screams at him, she's terrified. Her relationship
with Kong doesn't go beyond that. We're having a lot of fun
making it more psychologically real."

Tuesday
24th February 2004: King Kong Update:
Peter Jackson has been talking about how things are going so
far on King Kong "It's too early to say about cast, apart
from Naomi Watts, who's now confirmed. We need to write for
a few more weeks to establish exactly what type of other characters
we are looking for. I'm hoping there will be suitable roles
for one or two "LOTR" actors. As far as crew go, "LOTR"
veterans include Jan Blenkin and Caro Cunningham, both of whom
are producing "Kong" with me; Andrew Lesnie is on
board as (director of photography); Grant Major is production
designer; Dan Hennah is supervising art director. Both Weta
Workshop, led by Richard Taylor, and Weta Digital have been
at work on "Kong" for some months now. Howard Shore
is doing the music. We are talking to all other crew at the
moment and imagine the majority will be "LOTR" veterans."

being planned for.
Thursday 11th December 2003: King Kong Update:
Peter Jackson has been talking about the rumours that King Kong will cost $150 million and he doesn't sound concerned in the slightest "There are six or seven movies in production at the moment that will cost $200 million, so Universal will get it $50 million cheaper than elsewhere." He added that, like the Rings films, he intends to approach the ape movie as if it were actual history, imparting "a reality and a grittiness" to the story. It will be set, he said, in 1933, the year the story first appeared. "I think that's the last time you could expect to go exploring the South Seas and find an uncharted island."
Tuesday 9th December 2003: King Kong Update:
Andy Serkis could link up again with The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on his King Kong remake. The British actor would play the titular ape, using the same digital technology which was used to capture his performance as Gollum. "There have been talks about it," Serkis revealed. "Nothing's absolutely certain yet, but I'd love to work with Peter again, so hopefully, hopefully. I started dropping my ape movements in towards the end of playing Gollum, you know!"

Director Peter Jackson is looking at nabbing either George Clooney or Robert De Niro to play lead human Carl Denham, the man responsible for bringing the ape to the civilised world.
Wednesday 3rd December 2003: King Kong Update:
Peter Jackson has revealed a few new details about his new King Kong movie. The director, who will start work on his $200 million film in New Zealand next month, said he would be spending most of his time from January working on King Kong, with shooting planned to begin in August. He added that because the film would be set in the 1930s, to create the period it would be easier to shoot about 80 per cent of the film at his Miramar studios. Some of the natural locations, including King Kong's home, Skull Island, would also be shot at the studios. "I'm interested in (King) Kong being quite stylised and the jungles of Skull Island I want to be very over-the-top, like a jungle from hell. I imagine we are going to be more successful
pulling that off in the studio or in a back lot than we are trying to find a beech forest in the South Island." Jackson also confirmed that it looks likely that Naomi Watts will play the lead, Ann Darrow, in the big budget film. To read the full report Click Here.
Thursday 27th November 2003: King Kong Update:
Sir Ian Mckellen has revealed that Peter Jackson has talked to him about a possible role for him in King Kong "He did say he might have something for me to do in King Kong and I hope that's true. It would be lovely."
Wednesday 26th November 2003: King Kong Update:

Wednesday 5th November 2003: King Kong Update:
Naomi Watts has been talking about Peter Jackson’s King Kong project. It was
reported that Watts had been offered the lead role and she confirms that she
has met with Jackson to discuss the part. "I've always admired him, even
before The Lord of the Rings," she says. "And the King Kong story is so
iconic. There's something really simple, beautiful and heartbreaking about
it and he would take it to a whole new level." Universal Pictures is
currently eyeing a December 14, 2005 release date for the tentpole film.
Monday 22nd September 2003: King Kong Update:
Director Peter Jackson is apparently eyeing Naomi Watts to follow in the
footsteps of Fay Wray and become the obsession of the giant ape in King
Kong. Jackson has reportedly offered the lead role to Watts for Universal's
Christmas 2005 film, which will shoot in New Zealand. The star of The Ring
would play Ann Darrow, an American actress who makes a living performing in
Broadway song and dance shows in Depression-era New York.
Tuesday 12th August 2003: King Kong Update:
Word reaches us today that Universal will pay Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens a cool $20 million for King Kong. They are looking at a release date of Christmas 2005 for the movie.

The basic storyline will be very similar but the scenes, the sequences and the detail will be very different. the flip, smart-arsed tone of our old script. We are better writers now than we were in 1996. This new version will be based on the 1933 movie, but not on our 1996 script. This movie will be so much better than the 1996 film would have been. In hindsight, fate has been kind to us." He also revealed that two thirds of the movie will be set on Skull Island.
Thursday 3rd April 2003: King Kong Update:
Now that Peter Jackson is attached to the new King Kong movie, the rumour
mill has cranked into overdrive. Kate Winslets name is being linked with
the project, not for the first time either. Apparently, Jackson is a bit of
a fan. Meanwhile, star of the 1933 original, Fay Wray, has given Jacksons
film the thumbs up. "I think it is excellent and honorable that Peter
Jackson wants to be true to the original, she said. I am proud that he
wants to keep King Kong alive."
Monday 31st March 2003: King Kong Update:
Peter Jackson is to direct King Kong for Universal Pictures. The Lord of the
Rings helmer will begin work on the film immediately following the release
of the third and final installment of his blockbuster trilogy. Jackson will

co-writer Philippa Boyens. Jackson and Walsh will produce the film under
their WingNut Films banner. Scheduled for worldwide release in 2005, Jackson

effects will again be hanlded by his New Zealand-based company Weta, Ltd.
"No film has captivated my imagination more than King Kong, says Jackson.
I'm making movies today because I saw this film when I was 9 years old. It
has been my sustained dream to reinterpret this classic story for a new age.
The story of Kong offers everything that any storyteller could hope for: an
archetypal narrative, thrilling action, resonating emotion and memorable
characters. It has endured for precisely these reasons and I am honored to
be a part of its continuing legacy."
