John Wells Productions has optioned Edward P. Jones' Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Known World" and hired Anna Deavere Smith to write the adaptation. Smith will also produce the project. The historical novel was published in 2004 by HarperCollins and described the practice of free black Americans owning slaves.
