Authentic Japanese battle armor and costumes worn by Tom Cruise from "THE LAST SAMURAI" will be presented by Barneys New York, located in Beverly Hills, LA, October 30 to November 7.
Hand-crafted props and an exhibit of never-before-seen photos will accompany the costume pieces created for the film by Academy Award-nominated(R) costume designer Ngila Dickson.
Set in Japan during the 1870s, THE LAST SAMURAI tells the story of 'Captain Nathan Algren' (Tom Cruise), an American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's army in the art of modern warfare. As the government attempts to eradicate the ancient samurai warrior class in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly affected by his encounters with the samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him.

Thursday 6th March 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
The producers of The Last Samurai have been landed with a massive tax bill during the shoot of the movie. This could seriously affect other movies coming to New Zealand again. The government have demanded that production crew and actors pay tax on their daily living allowances. This tax was not imposed on other movies that have been filmed in New Zealand, most importantly the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Tuesday 4th March 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Dark Horizons scored four great new pics from The Last Samurai they can be viewed by Clicking here ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR. They also scored a great set report with an excerpt below "Sets of a Japanese Palace and huts were built next to the cricket ground which was dressed with tents, cannons and rifle firing targets. Horse drawn carriages brought extras dressed in period costumes into the parade ground, making a loop of the ground before disembarking."

Wednesday 26th February 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Just received the following information for The Last Samurai " Tom Cruise is filming in a town called new plymoth on the North Island in New Zealand. There will be some spectacular battle scenes, but they are not completely done filming that yet. The sets are absolutely fantastic. Half the movie will be subtitles." Interesting rumour the last one. Thanks to Neil!

Wednesday 26th February 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Timothy Spall has been talking about his role in the currently filming The Last Samurai "I play Simon Graham. He's an Englishman who's lived in Japan for like 20 years. My character becomes Tom Cruise's translator. My character not only speaks fluent Japanese - which is a bit of task because I don't speak any at all, I'm learning the lines phonetically - but he's also a photographer trying to record the old Japan before it disappears. He's sort of a minor aristocrat, sort of a third son of a minor baronet somewhere. He's what you would call a remittance man who's found himself in a place that he adores, incongruously in another culture entirely. And he's a very eccentric character, my character."

Friday 7th February 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Dark Horizons
scored some great set pics from The Last Samurai, make sure you've clicked over for a look see. They also scored two great set reports "Seems that film sets are being built at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth for "The Last Samurai". The local cricket ground is being turned into a Imperial Army Parade Ground, complete with multiple tents, 300 or so extras, 50 horses and canons. Three huge grass terraces surround the ground, and at the northern end, a giant blue screen will be erected to obscure the scoreboard and houses on Fillis St, which will be later replaced with a CG scene of a Tokyo street circa 1870. The production schedule at the ground is for 4 - 5 filming days within a 5 week period, from late Feb to the end of March. Tents, both big and small, have been put up on a field just outside Bell Block, where they have been weathered to turn them from white to a cream colour, although several tents have been put up on the cricket ground temporaly, to see how they will be placed, before all the tents being taken to the parade ground for filming." and "During a 2 day shoot in November at an old Los Angeles church, set in San Fransisco, Tom Cruise's character Capt. Woodrow Algren is asked to be a spokesman at the science fair for the Winchester Rifle because of his previous Civil War experince. Unfortunatly for the Winchester Rifle affiliates, Tom Cruise's character comes out drunk. In a drunk'n stooper, he goes on a rant about the brave boys who died at Little Big Horn and begins to get frustrated at the crowd because half of them are not listening. To get his point across, he loads a rifle and blows away the other inventions that are causes a distraction to him. Needless to say, he gets the crowds attention and his point across. He then walks away, and falls off the stage in the process. I found the scene amusing. At one point Tom Cruise needed the crowd to give him a little more feedback, and he said, "Help me, help you." -from Jerry Maguire. He got a laugh from everyone".

Tuesday 21st January 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
News reaches us that the production of The Last Samurai is having problems finding authentic Japanese extras in New Zealand and is having to fly in from Japan another 500 next month. The production is also going to have to fill up the massive battle scenes with Kiwi locals wearing helmets to disguise the fact of a lack of Japanese extras.

Monday 13th January 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Filming on The Last Samurai will be in and around Mount Taranaki and local Maori are thought to be demanding gifts and this is what their spokesman Te Miringa Hohaia had to say "Some gesture "not necessarily cash," needs to be made to the Maori because of their "special relationship" with Mount Taranaki." The movie will transform the mountain into Japan's Mount Fuji. They are demanding the gifts as they indicate filming may disturb sacred Maori sites and to protect the mountain's environment. The spokesperson for Venture Taranaki, a government body, which marketed the region to the filmmakers has said that Maori were consulted extensively before filming commenced and that the filming would bring £19 million to the local economy.

Wednesday 8th January 2003: The Last Samurai Update:
Coming Soon scored the following from a scoop sent in by one of their readers. 'While I was in LA last week, I went on the Warner Brothers Studio tour, and the tour guide gave us a few updates on The Last Samurai and the upcoming Superman movie. While I was there, they were in the process of taking down all the Last Samurai sets. One of the NYC back lots had been converted into an old Tokyo set, and they were in the final process of ripping it all back down to the original NYC sets, and it still had dirt roads left over. The "swamp" back lot is supposed to be the home of a friend of Tom Cruise's character, which will be on top of some stilts in the middle of the water'. Hit the link above for more.

Tuesday 10th December 2002: The Last Samurai Update:
Writer John Logan has been talking about the currently filming Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai "It's coming along great. I mean, I've known Tom for years, and he's such a consummate professional, like everyone says, and when he commits, he commits. And working on that with Ed Zwick - I developed it with Ed to direct - was just incredibly exciting, because I've also known Ed for years; he's an old Chicago hand, I might add, as is Michael Mann. I've got all these Chicago colleagues. And now it's a big ol' movie.Cruise has fully immersed himself in learning to use a sword. He's been training with a katana, with a long samurai sword, for months - on practically, I believe, a daily basis. You'll be stunned."
