Monday 9th February 2003: Levity Update:
Just received the following email which gives a ton of information on some films that The Z Review visitor Gary L. saw at Sundance " We were at Sundance and saw about ten movie. I liked three, so I will write about them. Far and away my favorite was this film, Levity, because it totally surprised me. Not its plot or anything, cause I sort of knew a lot about it from reading in the brochure they give you there. But that it was so subtle and powerful. At first I thought maybe it was a little slow, but it totally crept up on me as I gradually realized that it was totally deliberate, and, in fact, appropriate. It's more like a
meditation or something, and I found myself totally sucked in. (Anyways,
it's not that long actually, about an hour and a half.) I had expected not
to like it because my friend had gone the night before (at the opening) and
didn't understand the film at all. Then I saw it and we argued for a bit
and he agreed to see it again, which he did the last day of the festival. He
agreed with me at the end of the day, but he still thought it wasn't
"actiony" (his word) enough for him. But he admitted he was wrong and that
he was expecting more of a "blockbuster" movie (because of the movie stars
and some of the other people involved). It's definitely not a blockbuster
type, but the audience was really into it. I think that the film will only
appeal to people who either have sophisticated taste or who have the
patience for things to not be totally spelled out. But it's a really
interesting, thought provoking, emotional (not sentimental, emotional)
movie. It really stuck with me, too. And it's beautiful, too. It's a
really good movie that I bet not a lot of people will see."
