Looking back to our previous update
in August of last year, this was already known, but Wizard
World announced officially that F. Gary Gray will direct
Mage for Spyglass Entertainment. The article also included
a couple of quotes from Mage's creator Matt Wagner.
"I think Gary's a great choice," Wagner said.
"He handles drama very well, he handles character
very well, he handles comedy very well and he handles action
very well. All those elements are really prevalent in the
'Mage' screenplay."
Gray is also in line to direct the remake of The
Italian Job (check out the page
we posted last week for more details), but it looks like this
one may go first.
Mage - the movie is to follow Mage: The Hero Discovered, "Wagner's
inaugural 15-issue Mage mini-series from 1985". Adam
Simon (Bones, Brain Dead), is doing a polish on John Rogers'
screenplay. Click

Writer John Rogers has been talking to CHUD
about Mage now that they have a director attached in the form
of F. Gary Gray (The Negotiator). "Gray's a great
choice, He's not going to do some big, dumbed-down slick superhero
movie, he's going to do it gritty and cool and right. We don't
have some old guy who thinks this is kitschy or an action
figure franchise, we've got one of 'us'. Whether they keep
me around or not, after a year's worth of drafts on this thing,
I sleep well knowing he's the captain of the ship."
(originally appeared at CHUD).
Mage is a comic book property that has been in development
for quite a few years now. Mage was created by acclaimed comic
book artist Matt Wagner and for a good few years of the development
process Kevin Smith was continually talked about in connection
with writing the script for the Mage movie. But his scheduling
didn't work out so had to drop out of the scripting duties.
Also
rumoured to be interested in starring in a Mage movie are
Robin Williams and Vince Vaughn, we stress these were just
rumours from a couple of years back, but we did hear that
Mage creator Matt Wagner did speak to Vince Vaughn about the
role.
The
option on making a Mage movie is held by Critical Mass Entertainment
who are developing it for SpyGlass Entertainment. SpyGlass
,as you might know, brought us the mega hit The Sixth Sense
a couple of years back. Producing the movie are Andrew Crosby
and Ross Richie.
Hired
to write the script after Kevin Smith had to drop out was
a John Rogers and Matt Wagner had this to say about that "Everybody
on the production end loved his material and the minute I
read his stuff, I knew we'd found our guy. John's really got
the right combination of action, wit and heart that'll bring
Kevin Matchstick to life on screen. Plus, he's a huge fan
of the comic. Bingo. It's not going to be a panel-by-panel
rendition. I don't think it should be a panel-by-panel rendition.
The whole point is to catch the various high points and a
lot of the visual things that people remember from it, like
for instance, Kevin falling through the elevator. It's just
important to catch those scenes. They don't necessarily have
to be in exactly the same points they were in the book. that's
what translation is all about."
The
movie then went forward to Touchstone who have asked for several
tweaks to the script, the word on the script is very positive,
the movie has had budget approval of around $70 million and
matt Wagner had this to say about how the adaptation of Mage
is coming along "Nobody has yet used the word green light,
but they keep approving everything that comes through!"
The
rights also came up for renewal and thankfully Spyglass renewed
them, which is always a good sign that a company is serious
about getting a movie made. Further tweaks are being made
to the script and a hunt for a director is the next item on
the agenda for the producers.
The
most recent word on a Mage movie is that it has a date pencilled
in on Spyglass's own website for release in December 2002,
can this be true, is there enough time to get that done? I
suppose there is if things start hotting up on the project
