Manderlay is the second installment in a trilogy (which began with Dogville) and stars Kidman and Paul Bettany. It is scheduled for release next year. The film is expected to pick up thematically where Dogville leaves off, telling a story of slavery in the American South. Shooting is scheduled to begin in March in Denmark. Kidman had to drop out of the sequel because of scheduling conflicts.
Thursday 24th July 2003: Manderlay Update:
Despite hopes that she would appear in all three of Lars Von Trier's USA
films, recent scheduling conflicts have forced Nicole Kidman to pull out of
Manderlay, the second film in the series. “We and she would love for her to
do it, but we simply couldn't make it work,” said Von Trier's producer.
Kidman had originally confirmed her commitment to the project following some
hefty prompting by Von Trier at this year's Cannes Film Festival. But he is
now searching for two different actresses to take on the role of Grace
played by Kidman in Dogville. “We just want a good actress, wherever she's
from, added the producer. “When we started out with Nicole, she was not such
a big movie star as she has now become.”
