Morality Play is director Paul McGuigan's follow up to his brutal British drama Gangster No. 1 that starred Paul bettany, who also appears here.

The film, previousley entitled 'The Reckoning' also stars Willem Dafoe (see right) who plays Martin.

The film is released by Renaissance Films, who provide a
more in depth synopsis of the film over at their official site; "England 14th century. Plague and bandit attacks threaten remote communities and the forests that surround them add nameless terrors. The people labour under the yoke of two oppressive powers - the Church laying claim to their souls and the Knights, the feudal warlords, who command life or death. NICHOLAS (Paul Bettany), a young priest, is discovered in the act of adultery by an enraged husband who dies in the ensuing struggle. Appalled by his fall from grace, he turns his back on the Church and goes on the run. Destitute and forced to hide his privileged origins, NICHOLAS joins a troupe of traveling actors who have just lost one of their number. He is falling for SARAH (Gina McKee), the beautiful sister of the troupe's leader, but the shame of his past leads him to conceal his passion. He begs to stay and learn the mysteries of the actor's craft." (more here).

Joining Dafoe and Bettany in the film are Vincent Cassell (La Haine), Ewan Bremner (Pearl Harbor, Trainspotting), Brian Cox (Manhunter), Gina McKee (The Croupier, Notting Hill), Tom Hardy (TV's Band Of Brothers, Black Hawk Down) and Simon Pegg (TV's Spaced Out).

The film's DOP is Peter Sova, who has worked on Good Morning Vietnam and Donnie Brasco.
