Ned Kelly grossed $460,000, the third biggest opening

local campaign
has included a blitz-style publicity tour featuring most of
the key cast,
including star Heath Ledger, a huge number of massive outdoor
billboards and

Looks like the forthcoming Heath Ledger starring Ned Kelly
has had to change it's title to The Kelly Gang after legal

held the rights to the title and it was decided to play it
safe and change.
14th July 2002: Ned Kelly Update
| Production
started on April 21st on Ned Kelly, under the direction
of Gregor Jordan. Jordan was the guy behind Heath Ledger's
little seen debut film, Two Hands, a great little Austrailian
indie film also starring Bryan Brown. The shoot will take
in Victoria, Australia as well as some shooting in Ireland.
Joining Ledger, who here plays the title role of Ned Kelly,
are Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom. Rachel Griffiths and
Mulholland Drive's Naomi Watts. The film will be the first
to be made by the Australian arm of Working Title Films,
the comany resonsable for such films as Four Weddings
and a Funeral and About A Boy. The budget is apparently
|

a whopping
$30 million. Gregor Jordan has been speaking to the Sydney
Morning Herald about why he thinks Ledger is ideal for the
role of Kelly.
"Number one, he's the right age. Ned was 25 when he
died. Ned was also a very charismatic guy. When he walked
into a room, he'd command attention without even trying. Heath
is the kind of guy who just has that thing, too. He has lots
of charisma.
"If
you want to make a film of this size, you've got to have a
star on board. He fits the bill and, as an incredible bonus,
he's Australian."
Ledger will play Kelly for the last ten years of his life.
For those not familiar with the story, Kelly was hanged in
1880 at the age of 25. Ledger is 23. To get into the role,
Ledger has been staying in hotel room overlooking Old Melbourne
Jail, where Kelly was hanged. A pic of Heath Ledger in the
role of Ned Kelly is posted above.
