13th June 2002: Once Upon A Time In The Midlands Update:
Ananova report that Shane Meadows Once Upon A Time In The Midlands will hit UK cinemas on September 6th this year. The film is set in Uttoxeter, and tells the story of a man who comes back to town in an attempt to reclaim his ex-girlfriend. Starring in the movie are Kathy Burke, Robert Carlyle, Ricky Tomlinson and Rhys Ifans. The film was also screened at this years Cannes Film Festival.

I first heard of this little movie, Once Upon A Time In The Midlands around about nine months or so ago. Robert Rodriguez announced that he was gonna follow up El Mariachi and Desperado with Once Upon A Time In Mexico on British breakfast TV and literally the next day news broke of this. Now, at the time I thought it was all a big joke, but no, director/ writer Shane Meadows was deadly serious and now OUATITM unites an all star British cast that includes....... Robert Carlyle (The 51st State, The Beach, Trainspotting), Ricky Tomlinson (The 51st State), Rhys Ifans (Twin Town, Notting Hill), Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth), Vic Reeves as Bob Mortimer (Shooting Stars, The Smell of Reeves & Mortimer - both TV), Vanessa Feltz (British chat show host and star of Celebrity Big Brother in the UK) and Shirley Henderson who will be seen as Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets. Wow, what a cast, and the thought of Reeves and Mortimer in their debut film guarantees my attendence alone!

This sort of cast just shows the amount of talent out there that want to work with the TwentyFourSeven and Room For Romeo Brass writer/ director Meadows who grabbed my attention with the first of those aforementioned movies that starred the legend that is Bob Hoskins as a small time boxing trainer.

For those not in the know, or from the UK, the 'midlands' in question is the small area around Birmingham in the middle of England. Filming took part in Uttoxeter last September - December (2001).
