Scouser actress Jennifer Ellison is apparently having

lessons. Insert a cheap and sarcastic comment about
the former Brookie bimbo here, I'm sure you can think
of one.

Thursday
4th September 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update:
Anon has just emailed in the following description of
the sets for Phantom
of the Opera " They've built a 750 seater theatre
on one of stages. Proper
horseshoe shaped stalls and circles set out in boxes
facing a stage with
wings and huge stage machinery. Behind the stage there
are props and
scenery docks and at the back there are dressing rooms
and a stable. The
stable lead on to a little exterior building for the
outside of the stage
door. On another stage they have started building the
set of the foyer of
the Opera Populaire, a quadrangle type space with a
staircase which leads
up from the middle of the room and then splits going
up to either side of
one wall. There is a gallery going all around the foyer.
The entrance to
the Opera is opposite the end of the staircase and the
entrance to the
stalls is underneathe the staircase if you know what
I mean. I've only seen
the model of the foyer so I don't know what the colours
are but the theatre
is a standard red and gold. The pillars in the theatre
that separate the
boxes and hold up the circles are golden and in the
shape of bare breasted
women in that standard 19th century sexless style."

Tuesday
22nd July 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update:
"There'll be more talking in it, and more of the
singing will be [low-key]. The whole thing is just going
to be more pulled down and filmic, where we'll be able
to express more subtle emotions, rather than having
to belt it out, like on stage. That will be one big
advantage of film. I think there's like 25 different
stories. It was just always things cropping up—Andrew
was busy, [director] Joel [Schumacher] was busy, it
wasn't the right time. There was always just things
going on, until everybody was in the right place at
the right time".
Wednesday
17th July 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Director Joel Schumacher has
been talking about his new version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the
Opera, to star Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Alan Cumming and Ciarán
Hinds. Schumacher says shooting starts in October with Lloyd Webber financing
the project himself. He adds that Lloyd Webber doesn't really know yet what
he wants to see on the screen and as far as the story is concerned, that's
up to Schumacher. "He's left that up to me. He's not really a film person.
He's really a theater person. He doesn't claim to be a film guy." Schumacher
also points out that we can expect changes to the orchestrations. "The
music will be re-invented for this film. Remember, these orchestrations were
done 16 years ago." Friday
20th June 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Just received the following
info on Phantom of the Opera "It's been rumored that Miranda Richardson has
been cast as Madame Giry in the upcoming film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Phantom of the Opera. Ms. Richardson is a well respected actress and you can learn
more about here at www.miranda-richardson.com"
Thanks to Nico! Thursday
19th June 2003: The Phantom of the Opera Update: News reaches us that
Minnie Driver has been added to the Phantom of the Opera cast as Carlotta
the Opera house diva who files into a rage when she is upstaged by a younger
rival. Filming on Phantom of the Opera will September 15th, 2003 at Pinewood
Studios near London on a budget of $50-60 million, with filming also being
done in Prague and also the Czech Republic.
Monday 2nd June 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Just received the
following report concerning the casting for Phantom of the Opera "The Irish
and British are said to be furious, because after agents being informed that auditions
were being held for their female clients to star possibly as the lead in the Phantom
of the Opera, they have fell through. 'It is a disgrace that talented youngsters
from the other side of the world have not been given the chance to star in such
a movie, there is no way that Emmy Rossum will do the role of Christine any justice,
thousands of young people work hard everyday singing classical music, she doesn't.
If anyone should understand that it should be Lloyd Webber, he has let the British
and Irish female singers/actresses down.' (an agent speaking to 'The Guardian'
newspaper.)" Thanks to Mask!

Tuesday 27th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Emmy
Rossum is reported to be in negotiations to star as the female lead in the
big screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, to
be directed by Joel Schumacher. Gerard Butler is already attached to the
title role, with Patrick Wilson on board as Raoul, the boyfriend of Christine
(Rossum).

Thursday 22nd May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Director
Joel Schumacher has been talking to Moviehole about his Phantom of the Opera
project, in particular his decision to cast Gerard Butler as the Phantom.
I saw him in Dracula 2000 and he's in Timeline and the new Tomb Raider
this summer. He's the greatest, he's like the Scottish version of Colin Farrell,
says Schumacher. He's just a regular guy, he says it like it is. And
he's a fabulous singer. I knew him before we started casting Phantom and
he told me hed been in a band. I asked him if he could sing, not just
stand up on stage with a guitar, but really sing, and he said 'I think I
could. Then when he came in to audition he blew me and Andrew Lloyd
Webber away. Hes going to be a great Phantom, a young, sexy Phantom. And
I know the Michael Crawford fans are going to be hysterical, but maybe they
should stay home then. You can read the full interview by clicking
here.

Tuesday 20th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: According
to UK newspaper The Daily Mail, Emmy Rossum has been signed on to star as Christine
in Joel Schumachers The Phantom of the Opera. She will appear as the woman
who becomes the object of the Phantoms desire. Gerard Butler has been linked
with the role of the disfigured musical maestro who stalks her through the Paris
Opera. Schumacher apparently picked her because she can act and she satisfied
Andrew Lloyd Webber's insistence that his Christine have a terrific voice".

Monday 19th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Reports reach us
today that 17 year old Emmy Rossum has been signed up to play the role of Christine
in Phantom of the Opera.

Thursday 8th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Charlotte
Church has said she turned down a role in the forthcoming Phantom of the
Opera movie because the makers wanted her to lose weight. The 17-year-old
star said she was told to slim down even to audition for a role, despite
her global fame. "I won't fit into their ideals because I think it's
really wrong, she said in an interview. "I think if I'd just fitted
in with everything that everybody told me to I would've been in rehab age
12. They're saying even if I want to audition, I've got to lose a few pounds.
So I said 'Bugger off then'. I get it all the time, calls from the management
in LA saying, 'We're not getting adverts and major film parts because you're
too big'."

Wednesday 7th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Open castings
have been taking place in the UK recently for singing female parts in Phantom
of the Opera. We await more info on what roles were under consideration.

Tuesday 6th May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Word is circulating
that Gerald Butler may have to pull out of Phantom of the Opera due to other commitments.

Friday 2nd May 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Word
reaches us that Colin Farrell is desperately trying to get a part in Phantom of
the Opera. Just one major problem he can't sing. he has asked Russell Crowe to
help him out to try and develop his singing enough to get him a part.

Tuesday 29th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Just received the
following info on where Phantom of the Opera may be filming "There are rumors
running rampant out here in Los Angeles about a theatre being built at one of
the Casino's in Las Vegas for the Vegas production of Phantom. A couple of people
I know who do craft service have been approached and told that in about a year
time, there could be very good chance of them being employed on the show."
Thanks to Otterbabi!

Tuesday 29th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Scottish-born
actor Gerard Butler has been offered the starring role as the man behind
the mask in helmer Joel Schumacher and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical feature
The Phantom of the Opera. Butler has not decided whether to take the role
because he is fielding other offers, among them Crusader Entertainment's
The Game of Their Lives. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway and Emmy Rossum have emerged
as the top choices to play Phantom's female lead, Christine.

Monday 27th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Alan
Cumming, who plays Nightcrawler in the forthcoming X-Men 2, has revealed
that his next project will be Phantom of the Opera, in which he'll play one
of the theater owners. The adaptation, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and
Joel Schumacher, and to be directed by Schumacher, is reportedly scheduled
to start shooting this October.

Friday 24th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Joel Schumacher has
been talking about Phantom of the Opera " "You'd be surprised at how
little money we're getting but we'll try to make it work...you don't want to fail
and there are so many people who love this musical and the closest I've ever got
to a period film is Veronica Guerin, which is 1996! The notion of Paris in 1870
is pretty lush, pretty gorgeous"

Thursday 17th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Even
though Hollywood-babe Katie Holmes has been taking singing lessons, it looks like
it could still be a long-shot for her to nab a role in the big screen version
of Phantom of the Opera. According to an interview in The New York Post, Joel
Schumacher says he thinks Holmes singing is beautiful, but he may still
want to go with a younger actress for the role. Item: Vic Penney

Thursday 17th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Joel Schumacher
has been talking about the casting for Phantom of the Opera again and he states
that no roles have been cast so far apart from Patrick Wilson as Raoul. Filming
is thought to be starting this September at Pinewood.

Tuesday 15th April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update:
Everybody's favourite Bad Girl (in her Mum's eyes anyway) singer Charlotte
Church is thought to be being considered for the role of Christine in Phantom
of the Opera.

Thursday 3rd April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Joel Schumacher
has been talking about the non casting of Michael Crawford in Phantom of the Opera
"The decision to not use Michael Crawford is Andrew Lloyd Webber's and his
alone. All fans and friends of fans of Michael Crawford should please tell that
to everyone for me, because this has nothing to do with me. If you care to write
to ALW, it's the Really Useful Company in London"

Wednesday 2nd April 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Andrew Lloyd Webber
and director Joel Schumacher have cast Patrick Wilson in the role of Raoul in
Phantom of the Opera, the screen adaptation of Lloyd Webber's musical. Wilson
will play the boyfriend of the young singer who becomes the obsession of
the phantom.Wilson has already won Tony nominations for his work in "Oklahoma!"
and "The Full Monty," parlaying that into the lead role in Angels in
America, HBO's six-hour miniseries adaptation. Wilson stars alongside Al Pacino,
Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson, with Mike Nichols directing. Lloyd Webber is producing
the film from a script that he wrote with Schumacher.

Friday 14th March 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Katie Holmes is the
frontrunner for Joel Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera big screen adaptation.
She's reportedly already working with a vocal coach. The movie version of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit stage musical will begin principal photography
in the autumn in the UK.
 Friday
7th March 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Director Joel Schumacher,
who looks to have bagged the hot seat, although I've heard nothing confirming
it officially has been talking about the casting for the movie "Antonio [Banderas]
is NOT doing this version. I haven't cast yet, but I want to go younger. Maybe
Antonio was part of a past project. He was in 'Evita' and Andrew loves him, but
he's not my Phantom. Not Leo(nardo DiCaprio) . He's a little young for Phantom,
but someone young. The hard thing is that the leads have to sing and act. The
other interesting element is you don't see the face under the Phantom mask. He's
always in makeup. So, I could cast anyone. 'Chicago' is popular, not movie musicals.
I don't think it will last as a film trend. The good thing for me is that 'Phantom'
is its own house brand...I'm a little scared to do this project, but if you're
not a little scared, then you're doing the wrong movie. If you think you can phone
it in, then God has a very wicked surprise for you. It's good to be scared and
not cocky"
 Friday
28th February 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Andrew Lloyd Webber is
thought to be revealing some of the key cast members names for Phantom of the
Opera at the American Film Market next week.
 Monday
13th January 2003: Phantom of the Opera Update: Andrew
Lloyd Webber has bought back the film rights to Phantom of the Opera for over
a million pounds as he wants to get the movie made independently, he will executive
produce the movie which is rumoured to be being directed by Joel Schmacher. No
word on casting but Michael Crawford will be unavailable to reprise his most famous
role as filming is due for the Autumn this year. The movie has a rumoured budget
of $60-70 million.
