Monday 7th July 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean Update:
The cast of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has been
talking about the movie. In some detail. First to Keira Knightley, who has
been chatting about how the movie differs from the Disneyland ride and what
it's like to walk the plank. "I think the film is so completely removed
from the ride," she said. "There really isn't anything in the story that is the
same as the ride, except for a little bit like the jail sequences and
certain aspects that are a homage to the ride. And in a classic pirate
movie moment, Knightley is forced to walk the plank. "I was up there for
about two days, she revealed. Yes, two days to film that scene. It was at
least two days to film pretty much every scene because we did it from every
possible conceivable angle. Plus, there is a lot of smoke in the movie.
Lots of it. And if the wind changed, then the smoke wouldn't be in the shot. So
we were constantly waiting for the winds to be in the right direction. And
then they'd move the boat to make sure if the wind was over here, the boat
would be there. So, it was a lot of waiting around. Me standing on the
plank getting vertigo. And then at the end of two days, they said, 'Well, okay,
you don't have to really jump off.' And I said, 'You're joking. I've been
standing up here for the last two days, now you're saying I don't have to
jump off?' So I said I'll do it. I just did it once." Johnny Depp,
meanwhile, has stated that he based his Captain Jack character on Rolling
Stones star Keith Richards. "Pirates were the rock stars of the 18th
century, so I thought of the coolest rock star and Keith Richards became my
main ingredient," he said. "Captain Jack is a guy who spent too much time
in the sun and although his brain has been affected, he always has a martini
glass in his hand. I knew that character so well." To see what Orlando
Bloom said in an interview with Latino Review, click here.

It has been revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl will be the first film released under the Disney banner with a PG-13 rating. This is quite a change for the ultra cautious Disney label who would normally have farmed out any fare that didn't get a family rating to Touchstone or even Miramax.

Thursday 17th April 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean Update:
Keira Knightley has been talking about Pirates of the Caribbean " I do have fight scenes. She starts kicking ass which is great because she spends quite a bit of time hovering in the corner going “Oh My God!” which is quite understandable if you get taken away by pirates. She really starts to fight back so I had fight scenes with staffs and candlesticks, never a sword. They wouldn’t give me a sword. Originally there weren’t any fight scenes in the script. I don’t remember first reading it thinking oh my God; I am going to be an action figure. Suddenly, I’m doing all these fight scenes. I said, WAIT! WAIT! This wasn’t what I signed up for! (Jokingly, of course) I signed up for a nice corseted job sitting in the corner, occasionally coming in to do a close-up. That’s what I signed up for and suddenly I’m fighting all these baddies. There’s a lot of CGI and these skeletal pirates and stuff so you don’t actually fight with anybody. It’s not like two actors doing a fight scene. You do the fight with an actor and then the actor disappears and you do the fight without anybody there so you’re being beat up by an invisible person. I was fighting with a big staff and then had to do it without the staff because of the CGI. So, not only did they take the actor away, they took my weapon away as well. I’m miming the whole thing. I never thought that mime would be something I’d need to use but it’s safe to say that if you’re at drama school and you get the chance, for God’s sake, just make sure you watch the mime classes. "

Mackenzie Crook has been talking about his role in Pirates of the Caribbean as Ragetti " Johnny said he would put in a good word for me - I would like to think that he did. Tuesday 4th March 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean Update:
Just received the following set report information for Pirates of the Caribbean "I live in St Vincent and the Grenadines, where they're filming the Pirates of the Caribbean movie,I've seen all the actors around the town, they walk around freely because it's a small place and not much people know them. I was on set a couple weeks ago,and it's looking good, the Black Pearl is also a very strange looking boat, they even made a beer out of the name,it was launched last week at the Ocean Allegro, bar and resteruant, where all the actors go to have dinner and hang out. The set in the country area is quite small, it has a small town, with a few houses, and a mill, and also a dock, a bridge, where Johnny and Orlando Run under, for one of the scenes, but they're really not the ones doing it,they just did the talking in that scene, and their doubles do the running. They have also been filming in Tobago Ques, that is one of the Grenadine islands, They're supposed to finish by this week Ithink, because most of the workers, and pirates have left, only the main actors and a few other people are here" Thanks to Caribbeanhottie!

Summary
The film is inspired by the Disney theme park ride, and is described by the studio as a big-budget "romantic action adventure". Set in the Caribbean Sea in the 17th century, this is the story of a gentleman rogue pirate, Jack Sparrow, who teams up with Will Turner to rescue the 20 year old daughter of a governor when she is kidnapped by pirates. They must then try to stop the evil plan of a ship of dangerous pirates, led by Capt. Blackheart, who are trying to reverse an ancient curse that leaves them stuck between life and death, with the light of the moon revealing their skeletons, like some kind of undead monsters.

Film Outline

The film will include familiar elements from the ride as well as a supernatural curse, a maiden's rescue, a romance, secret hidden treasure, and finally, a climactic sea battle between the pirates and the British Navy.
Main Players
· Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp; a roguish but goodhearted pirate with an adventurous streak, very much a "Han Solo" type of character.
· Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom; a fellow who hates pirates but discovers an important link to them in his past.
· Captain Barbossa, the evil pirate captain played by Geoffrey Rush; he and his mateys are victims of a deadly pirate curse.
· Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter as played by Keira Knightly. She'll be the romantic interest of Will Turner.

Behind the Scenes Info

The film has a budget of around 137 million dollars, and has said to have tremendous merchandising potential and the possibility for sequels. The special effects are being done by Industrial Light and Magic. There are already plans to develop the movie into a video game.
Some of the movie sets at the Disney studios in Burbank, CA include a completed mill interior, a pirate ship hold, and a massive volcanic cavern set which was described as "breathtaking." Apparently, the set will be flooded with several feet of water.
The script for Pirates was penned by a quartet of writers, with the most recent draft by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (Shrek, The Mask of Zorro, The Road to El Dorado). The pair were hired to add the supernatural elements to a previous draft by Stuart Beattie. Beattie's version was a brush-up of the first draft by screenwriter Jay Wolpert (The Count of Monte Cristo). Beattie, regarded as an expert on pirates, was brought on to add realism.

Monday 13th January 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean Update:
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been talking about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean "The pirates – what happens is they stole this cursed treasure and unless they put the treasure back, they never die, they can't enjoy life," Bruckheimer continues. "They can't enjoy food or sex. All they want to do is plunder and get more and more and more gold. And in the moonlight, they turn into skeletons. So, you can just imagine the effects. ILM is doing the effects. [Director] Gore Verbinski, who did THE RING, is very imaginative and is working with ILM. I've never seen skeletons like this. They have actual features and pieces of flesh and their costumes still on, so it's fascinating."

Saturday 16th November 2002: Pirates of the Caribbean Update:
Dark Horizons scored a great set report from the currently filming Johnny Depp movie Pirates of The Caribbean "The filming that was taking place on the boat at the time of the picture being taken of it was young Will (Orlando Bloom's character) is found floating in the ocean amoungst reckage of another ship and is rescued. The ship itself is basically a floating bardge, tugboats have to pull it away from the dock and out to sea and back again. The reason it has large sections missing is to accomidate the camera's/equiptment being braught on board. It's complete with a "rest area" set(a section where the navel officers would go and sleep). But the cast and crew used it - extras basically got paid for 2 days to sleep on set in a hammock."

Monday 11th November 2002: Hidalgo/ Pirates Of The Caribbean Update:
"Hi. I live in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, across the field from where they just wrapped filming on Hidalgo. Prior to wrapping on that film, they started another on the same field/parking lot. From what I have been able to find on the web regarding this film, the descriptions and filming schedule, it appears as though the second film is Pirates of the Caribbean. They have built what looks like a fort/prison overlooking the water, and tonight are using fire and smoke. A few days ago there were a number of actors/extras dressed in what appeared to be cadet/guard uniforms". Thanks to Julie.

Monday 21st October 2002: Pirates Of The Caribbean Update:
Dark Horizons scored a great scoop today with a set report from the currently shooting Johnny Depp movie "The wardrobe for this movie alone is extremely accurate - they have every little nuance of detail in all their hand-sewn costumes. They have tons of wigs that they are using as well. The props for the movie are very accurate, they were putting finishing touches on the cannons and cannon balls. There were at LEAST 45 cannons they they were getting ready. I am also being told that this will be THE most VIOLENT Walt Disney Pictures movie to date and most likely will recieve a PG-13 rating. In one scene that I heard about, one of the pirates describes to a little girl how he will kill her and what he will do to the body".

Saturday 19th October 2002:Pirate Of The Caribbean Update:
Writer Terry Rossio has revealed some information from the set of Pirates Of The Caribbean with word that one of Johnny Depp's teeth was too dark, and gave him a gap tooth look, and had to be lightened. Jonathan Pryce's role in the movie is of Governor Swann. There is also a monkey on set to which Geoffrey Rush has stated "Whenever the monkey is on screen, I'm just a large human prop". Other character sin the movie are Pintel and Ragetti, Ragetti has a wooden eye. Three ships are being used in the movie HMS Dauntless, HMS Interceptor and the Black Pearl.
