Tuesday 18th March 2003: Rendezvous With Rama Update:
Morgan Freeman has revealed that he is still actively
looking to develop Rendezvous With Rama as a movie."The
bugaboo there is the script. A picture like this, that is
written by Arthur C. Clarke, the problem is trying to get
someone to understand what it is. These things, they always
want to make it into an action film, so you've got to cowboy
it up a little bit. You can't
do it with this. And we've been having trouble getting someone
to see the science aspect of this, the exploratory aspects
of it, rather than the blood and guts and stuff. It's not
in limbo. We're pushing hard at it constantly"
Rendezvous
With Rama has been in development as a movie since 1997 but
things have started to seriously move on the project this
year. The movie was stuck in development hell quite a bit
because it was originally being distributed by Polygram Films
which went into liquidation.
Rendezvous
With Rama is being produced by Morgan Freemans own production
company called Revelations Entertainment. It is thought that
Morgan Freeman will be taking a role in the movie, but interestingly
it is not listed as one of the projects he has in development
on the imdb, a rumoured release date for Rendezvous With Rama
is for some time in 2003, whereas Tusker which is also due
in 2003 is listed on the imdb, hmmm?
The
premise of Rama is that an giant alien spaceship is discovered
to be on a collision course with the Sun. A team is sent to
investigate from the spaceship Endeavor and within Rama they
find a vast organic world that is possibly abandoned. Rendezvous
With Rama is the first part of a quartet of books by Arthur
C.Clarke, the others being titled Rama II, Garden Of Rama,
Rama Revealed. So that's the sequels all organised already
then. No word if Revelations Entertainment bought the rights
to those novels as well, I would presume they did.
A
rumoured budget for Rendezvous With Rama is in the $100 million
ballpark. This is probably due to the effects work required
for the movie. The word was that they wanted to film the sets
digitally and THEN place the actors into the sets.
This was back in 1997, and the movie was thought to be being
filmed digitally instead of the usual Panavision.
David
Fincher has been attached to this project as director since
that time as well, but he's in the middle of The Panic Room.
If he say finished off that movie sometime in 2002, he starts
Rendezvous With Rama immediately after, then I would say a
2003 release date is maybe pushing it. It was also rumoured
that Rendezvous With Rama may be fully CG so again that would
slow things down. You might have noticed chip makers Intel
listed as the makers, the reason for that is they are the
digital partners for the movie.
And
that is as far as things sem to have gotten, Intel are working
on developing the effects for the movie alongside Freeman's
entertainment company which appears to be a huge task. Click
over to the official site and you can see some of the conceptual
art that they have released. Designing a lot of the movie
is Moebius who, along with being a famous comic book artist,
designed a lot of The Abyss.
