Sahara Synopsis:
The adaptation of Clive Cussler's bestseller follows master explorer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) who takes on the adventure of his life when he embarks on a treasure hunt through some of the most dangerous regions of West Africa. Searching for what locals call "The Ship of Death", a long lost Civil War battleship which protects a secret cargo, Pitt and his wisecracking sidekick (Steve Zahn) use their wits and clever heroics to help Doctor Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) when they realize the ship may be linked to mysterious deaths in the very same area.

Filming on Sahara has had to be delayed after Penelope Cruz suffered heat exhaustion while they were filming in the desert in Morocco. Tom Cruise has jetted in to see her, and they have flown back to Madrid for her to recuperate with her family.

Monday 19th January 2004: Sahara Update:
"Sahara" author Clive Cussler, creator of the adventure character 'Dirk Pitt', has sued producer Crusader Entertainment, a Beverly Hills company owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, for allegedly 'altering' a screenplay that Cussler had already approved. Cussler, who has sold more than 125 million books, is asking for $10 million in damages.
"Crusader materially altered the approved screenplay without Cussler's written consent ... and has began to film a screenplay which it knows was explicitly disapproved by Cussler," according to the complaint filed in LA Superior Court.
Matthew McConaughey has been cast to play Dirk Pitt in "Sahara" to be directed by Michael Eisner's son Breck Eisner.

Monday 22nd September 2003: Sahara Update:
Filming on Sahara will take place on a lake in Hampshire called Hawley
Lake. Starring in the sequence will by Penelope Cruz and Matthew
McConaughey. The sequence will be filmed on 10th December with the sets
being constructed in October.

Wednesday 10th September 2003: Sahara Update:
Penelope Cruz is in talks to star opposite Matthew McConaughey in the big-screen adaptation of Clive Cussler's 1992 novel Sahara for director Breck Eisner. The project will begin production in the autumn, with Paramount Pictures distributing. Cruz would play the role of Eva Rojas, a U.N. scientist who is threatened with assassination while investigating a disease driving North Africans into madness and threatening to extinguish life in the world's seas. McConaughey is playing secret agent, treasure hunter and explorer Dirk Pitt. Steve Zahn will portray Pitt's wisecracking sidekick.

Director Breck Eisner is in talks with Steve Zahn to star alongside Matthew
McConaughey in the adaptation of Clive Cussler's novel Sahara. The movie is
being produced by Crusader Entertainment. The movie will film in the UK and
also Morocco, no word of dates yet. The movie is being distributed by
Paramount.

Monday 14th April 2003: Sahara Update:
Matthew McConaughey is said to be in final negotiations to star in and
executive produce Crusader Entertainment's big-screen adaptation of Clive
Cussler's 1992 novel Sahara, for director Breck Eisner. The project will
begin production in the autumn. with Paramount Pictures distributing. The
story is the first installment of the author's best-selling Dirk Pitt
series, about an intrepid adventurer and explorer. There are 13 Pitt books
in Cussler's series, and Crusader hopes that Sahara will be the beginning of
a franchise with McConaughey at the center.

Friday 11th April 2003: Sahara Update:
Breck Eisner is in negotiations to helm Sahara, the first big screen version
of the Dirk Pitt bestselling action-adventure by Clive Cussler. Sahara,
which was greenlit last May, will introduce Dirk Pitt as a modern-day
Indiana Jones. The story will be set in the Sahara Desert and central Africa
with Pitt and a U.N. medical team battling a deadly microbe which threatens
the global marine environment.

Rumours are circulating that Tom Cruise is in talks to play Dirk Pitt in an adaptation of Clive Cussler's novel.


12th May 2002 - Sahara Update:
Paramount Pictures have announced that Clive Cussler's book Sahara will be adapted into a motion picture with Reign Of Fire and X Files director Rob Bowman at the helm.

The book follows adventurer Dirk Pitt into the Sahara in search of a deadly toxin. Pitt has featured in many Cussler books, and 17 consecutive Pitt novels have been New York Times bestsellers.

"Getting 'Sahara' ready for the big screen is very exciting and a huge challenge," said director Bowman. "We have an obligation to Clive and his devoted fans to bring a lot of heart-pounding action, intense drama and just the right amount of humor to be true to his original vision. We want fans to expect a lot, because we expect to deliver a lot."

Shooting is scheduled to start in October of this year with a possible 2003 release. It's believed that most of the film will be shot in Namibia. No actors are attached to the project as of yet.
