With new US prime-time TV shows facing cancellation, the networks are turning to popular, theatrical movies as a form of 'ratings insurance'. Looking for programming geared towards the ideal demographic of 'young men', Fox Broadcasting has acquired rights to "The Rundown," starring The Rock, and "School of Rock," starring Jack Black, with the studios asking for 15 to 18 per cent of box office gross for their broadcast fees.

Paramount is estimated to have received $22 million for broadcast rights to a movie package that included "School" ($73 million box office gross), "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" ($23 million gross) and "Fighting Temptations" ($30 million gross).

According to one network executive, first-run theatrical movies are "reliable and great for ad sales. The marketplace is just going to get stronger ... this deal is indicative of that."

Thursday 11th September 2003: The School of Rock Update:
At "The School of Rock" press conference, reporters were initially greeted with Led Zeppelin piped through the sound system.

Starring Jack "Shallow Hal" Black, premise of "The School Of Rock" revolves around 'Dewey Finn' (Jack Black), a cash-strapped rocker who takes on a job as a substitute teacher at a posh private school, where he succeeds in teaching his charges the finer points of rock 'n roll 101.

"We're just trying to make something funny" said Black, aka lead singer of the band 'Tenacious D.'

"What's funny about me teaching and guiding the kids to a higher plane of knowledge is that it's just wrong," he said.

Sexy Sara "Evolution" Silverman and Joan "High Fidelity" Cusak also star in director Richard "Dazed and Confused" Linklater's film.

The producers were looking to make a 'family film' with 'The School of Rock', co-starring young up-and-coming musicians (playing students) and Black said there was a 'drooling make-out' scene between him and Cusak that got a number of tongues wagging.

"There actually was a make-out scene that was cut from the film," he said.

"Hopefully it will be on the DVD, because it was my favorite scene ..."

HiViking managed to catch an early screening of School of Rock and it looks like its a good un "I just happened to get one of those free movie passes. I went with the feeling I was going to leave early; especially when I heard it was a movie about rock and geared toward teenagers. On the contrary; I absolutely loved the movie! I'd pay to see it again when it comes out. It is the funniest preview I was invited to see since Ruthless People. It is certainly the funniest film I've seen in a theater in a very long time. " Thanks to Anon!
