Plot
: "Inspired by the legendary Egyptian warrior, "The Scorpion King" is set 5,000 years ago in the notorious city of Gomorrah, where an evil ruler is determined to lay waste to all the nomadic peoples of the desert. The few remaining tribes, never natural allies, have to unite or perish. Knowing their enemy relies on the visions of a sorcerer, they hire a skilled assassin, Mathayus (The Rock), to eliminate the visionary. After infiltrating the enemy camp, Mathayus discovers that the sorcerer is in fact a beautiful woman (Kelly Hu). Rather than eliminate her, he takes her deep into the desert badlands, knowing that the ruler's henchmen will stop at nothing to rescue her and bring her back. Seriously wounded in the ensuing battle, Mathayus must find the strength to lead his scrappy band of allies back to Gomorrah for a final confrontation". (Dark Horizons).

The film that looked like it was to be the years biggest turkey may have something after all. Aint It Cool News have posted two fairly good reviews. Now I didn't really like The Mummy Returns, but loved the first movie. My biggest fear with this is The Rock's ability to carry a whole movie. After all, the guy only had a few lines in The Mummy Returns. But the first review says that he's pretty good as the Scorpion King. "He's charasmatic, funny, delivers lines well, a definite powerful presence on screen, and he does all sorts of funny facial expressions with good comedic timing (and the right editing)".

Going on to the movie as a whole, the second review kicked off with the following line, "It’s very silly, and rocks like hell". And, then "None of the pretension, none of the boredom of the Mummy flicks. Just big dumb action, with a vicious kinetic energy. Only one of the big set pieces fails (a fight in a sandstorm about half way through), but the rest rule the roost. Especially the finale, which weaves together 3 or 4 separate fight sequences and crashes them all together for a marvellous crescendo in a way that Blade 2’s House Of Pain sequence failed to do."

This could actually be quite a cool little movie. We'll see.

Just added the teaser trailer at the top of the page, which debuted on Dark Horizons on Monday. A little update while we're here. IGN FilmForce have posted five stills from The Scorpion King, which give us a first look at Kelly Hu as The Sorceress and Michael Clarke Duncan is his role as Balthazar. See them here.

And to the trailer. Well if you're lucky enought to own The Mummy Returns on DVD, well you'd have seen the trailer to The Scorpion King. Now I can't find that trailer online anywhere, but keep your eyes peeled on the new official site as it will probably appear there soon.

The trailer is now available

- About.com held an interview with Michael Clarke Duncan and the subject of The Scorpion King came up, "They started production already. I have a couple more days and then I'm starting. I play Balthezar, the leader of this gigantic army and I battle The Rock. Then it switches around to where we become allies and we fight a bigger foe".

- After a superb performance in the upcoming The Mummy Returns, The Rock has been cast in this spin off movie, The Scorpion King. The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson will play the title role along with other cast members Michael Clarke Duncan and Kelly Hu. The Rock recentley gave an interview regarding his character in the film, "We are about 5-10 years before the Scorpion King actually became a king. Before he was a king, he was an assassin. An Akkadian assassin. Their belief is once they are given an oath to kill somebody, they will die making sure that it's done. There's so many twists and turns, fantastic surprises within the film. He had to kill a sorcerer. I don't want to get into it because I'd have to tell you everything." Source: Coming Attractions & TheRock.com

Chuck Russell (The Mask, Eraser) is to direct the film and The Mummy helmer Stephen Sommers will co-write and also produce. Also co-writing is Jonathan Hales who is also co-writing Star Wars Epidode II with George Lucas, pretty cool huh?

The film is to start shooting in two days in LA, that makes it 14th March.
