1st September 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
Winnipeg Sun reports that Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez are
expected in Chicago Wednesday for exterior filming on "Shall
We Dance?", including scenes near the city's L Train transit
system.
Lopez completed her scenes in Winnipeg Thursday.
Friday, film trucks were back at the classic old house on South
Drive where filming began in June--the film residence of Gere
and co-star Susan Sarandon.
On the weekend Gere and Sarandon re-shot a scene in the Convention
Centre parking garage downtown where Gere's character chases
after Sarandon as his wife. Sarandon's character has hired a
private investigator when she believes her onscreen husband
is having an affair.
Gere, who celebrated his 54th birthday on the weekend, was also
involved in shooting at The Leather Patch store on Academy Road.
Nathan Hogg, assistant manager of nearby Academy Uptown Bowling
Lanes (a converted movie palace once known as the Uptown Theatre)
told the Sun that Gere was outside waving to everybody.
One Academy Road business owner was on her way to the set with
54th birthday balloons for Gere when she tripped over a pylon.
She ended up being taken away in an ambulance with an injured
leg.
Hogg told the Sun he believes the balloons eventually got to
Gere.
A wrap of local shooting party was later held at Winnipeg's
Fairmont Hotel, once known as The Winnipeg Inn and the Westin-Winnipeg.

25th August 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
H has been in touch with the following " The Monday,
Aug. 25 Winnipeg Sun has a pic and story by staffer Paul Turenne
saying Jennifer Lopez, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Mya and
other cast members from the movie Shall We Dance? rented the
second floor of the 529 Wellington restaurant last night for
a dinner together before they all head their separate ways by
next weekend.
No mention of who will be involved in September exterior filming
in Chicago."
Thursday
14th August 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
This just in "HIP-HOP artist Ja Rule cancelled
a concert in Winnipeg earlier this summer, but it looks like
he's going to get a chance to get together with Jennifer Lopez
here in town anyway. The inside word is that he has a small
part in Lopez's movie Shall We Dance. It should be a happy reunion.
Ja Rule, born Jeff Atkins in Queens, New York, collaborated
with Lopez on the hit song Ain't It Funny. Though the movie
Shall We Dance is set in the world of ballroom dance, it would
appear to have a strong hip-hop component as well. Pop star
Mya has also been cast in the film. "

1st August 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
Just received the following info on the Shall We Dance? filming
"Ben and
Jen met up last night in Winnipeg's Exchange District.
Sources said mega-star Ben Affleck hooked up with fiance Jennifer
Lopez on
the set of the film Shall We Dance.
Shooting wrapped up at 12:30 this morning on Ross Avenue between
Princess
and Ellen Street.
A voice on police radio said filming was done for the night
and that Lopez
was ready to be picked up and that Affleck was with her.
Security near the set was fiercely tight. Streets were manned
by police and
additional security, heightening speculation that Affleck was
on the set.
It's believed Affleck had an early morning flight out today."
Thanks to H!

Friday
25th July 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
The following info on Shall We Dance? has just been
sent in " Last night (July 24th), in the midst of the chaotic
atmosphere of the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and 30 degree heat
for the fifth day in Old Market Square, downtown Winnipeg, a
block of Albert Street which is a notorious prostitution-ground
in Winnipeg was barricaded for the filming of a scene that involved
Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez strolling down the street to
a flower stand, where, assumably, Gere buys J-Lo flowers. A
crowd of perhaps 60 fans stood on the perimeter to watch as
Gere and Lopez listened to direction for the scene. As it was
Lopez's 33rd birthday yesterday, the crowd broke out in a loud
(if sloppy) version of 'Happy Birthday', which J-Lo acknowledged
with a wave and a smile that promted giddy cheers from the small
collective. It was rumoured that Ben Affleck, filming in Vancouver,
would arrive in town for the occasion, but hadn't been sighted
late into the evening.
The shoots now move indoors for two weeks, after which it is
assumed there will be more scenes filmed around the Chicago-styled
Exchange District of Winnipeg." Thanks to Rene!

Monday
7th July 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
H has sent in the following info today "WINNIPEG Police
say that the
necklace stolen earlier this week from the set of the movie
Shall We Dance
wasn't a factor in the grisly murder at the Royal Albert Arms.
Sgt. Terry Desmond, of the Winnipeg Police Service homicide
unit, said the
necklace was found in the hotel room where the body of Robin
Robert Greene
was found by police Wednesday morning.
But Desmond said the man charged with Greene's murder, Sydney
Teerhuis, 33,
hadn't stolen the necklace.
The necklace was reported stolen Tuesday afternoon from one
of the trailers
on the movie set. Scenes were being filmed that day at the Legislative
Building. A police source said that the necklace, valued at
about $4,000,
belonged to actress Susan Sarandon, one of the stars of the
movie.
Desmond provided no further details on the city's 12th murder
of the year
and would not say how the stolen necklace ended up at the murder
scene.
Desmond said there was no indication that the two men had been
fighting
over the necklace.
Desmond would not confirm some media reports that said Greene's
body had
been dismembered and his internal organs removed. Desmond would
only say
that the autopsy found that Greene had died of multiple stab
wounds.
Police said this week that they learned of the murder when Teerhuis
turned
himself in and led police to the Exchange District hotel room.
Teerhuis has
been charged with second-degree murder. His next appearance
in court is set
for July 10. "

Thursday
3rd July 2003: Shall We Dance? Update:
Just received the following update on Shall We Dance? and
An Unfinished Life from H " Canadian Press story, I found
in the Sun tabloid newspaper chain on Thursday (www.canoe.ca,
I think their Jam showbiz section would have it.
It is datelined Burdett, Alberta and starts off:"Gas station
owner Shannon Pahl and his family were the toast of this small
Alberta community Sunday when Jennifer Lopez spent the day at
their business shooting a scene for the movie "An Unfinished
Life."
I imagine the story originated with the Medicine Hat News, though
I found it in the Winnipeg Sun.
The Thursday Winnipeg Free Press notes that John O'Connell,
who worked on "Moulin Rouge" and "Strictly Ballroom"
is the choreographer for Shall We Dance. The paper has a piece
on Sarah Murphy-Dyson, first soloist with the Royal Winnipeg
Ballet, being one of 16 locals who landed dance parts in the
movie along with her husband, RWB principal dancer Johnny Wright.
She notes that the dancing in the movie is very different from
ballet."
Monday
30th June 2003: Shall We Dance Update:
Just received the following info on Shall We Dance " The
Saturday Winnipeg Free Press reports that Len ("About Schmidt")
Cariou has been added to the cast of "Shall We Dance"
in the role of Richard Gere's boss. The New York City-based
Tony Award winner for Sweeney Todd on Broadway tells the paper
that he grabbed the role because it will give him a chance to
visit his relatives and grandchildren where he started his acting
career in 1960. The Winnipeg-native is also a former artistic
director of the Manitoba Theatre Centre and will be in L.A.
Tuesday as part of an MTC delegation to kick off a new relationship
with an L.A.-based theatre. Cariou will return to his home town
on Wednesday to begin shooting.Over the years the Free Press
has followed Cariou's theatrical career. He tells the paper
that films, television and commercials such as one as the voice
of Burger King enable him to keep working at meaty, but low
paying roles in regional theatres." Thanks to H!

24th June 2003: Shall We Dance Update:
Just received the following cool info on Shall We Dance
"Filming on "Shall We Dance" got rolling Monday
at a classic look old house on South Drive in Winnipeg's Fort
Garry area.
The impressive old house with two driveway entrances was once
the home of the late local politician and entrepreneur Richard
Bonnycastle, who started Harlequin Romance novels in 1949.
The current owners moved out over a week ago to make way for
the production at what I believe will be Richard Gere's home
in the film.Two-way traffic along South Drive was cut to one-way
with sorry for the disruption for filming signs greeting motorists.
Equipment including Polaris Starsuites was also parked earlier
all around the Fort Garry United Church on Point Road, some
distance from the old house.
The Winnipeg Free Press for June 23 has a big feature keyed
off a page one teaser: Rules for Stargazing....Keep your cool
if you spot Richard Gere, J.Lo and Susan Sarandon in town.
The Page D1, section front story by staff writer Randall King
added in the headline that stargazers should keep their distance
and let the visitors do their work and enjoy their stay.
"J.Lo is a person, too--let her eat dinner in peace"
added the page D1 subhead.
Actually J-Lo isn't here yet. Believe the week of shooting in
Chicago may not come until either late August or early September.
Both the broadsheet Free Press and the tabloid Winnipeg Sun
have carried stories and pix on the production.Unconfirmed media
reports from the film's production office say the production
could be here until about August 29 before moving to Chicago.
The Sarandon role of Gere's wife was first offered to Britain's
Emma Thompson. Believe both the director and producer are British."
Huge thanks to H Atkinson!
