18th March 2004: Taking Lives Update:
The Z Review's U.S. correspondent Joel Block was in attendance
at last night's L.A. premiere of the Angelina Jolie and Ethan
Hawke starring Taking Lives and talked to several of the key
people involved in the production:
First up
he spoke to composer Philip Glass, who has been extremely busy
recently completing the score for Secret Window and also the
score for Undertow.
When did
you find time in your busy schedule for the Taking Lives score?
"Pre-production for the musical score began in July and
I began writing music in the Fall."
How many
people were used in recording the score?
"I used a full orchestra to allow for depth of sounds and
to reflect the emotional reach of the film. I wanted the music
to be intimate and personal and to relate to several of the
main characters. Lots of preparation time was spent with Director
D. J. Caruso including the discussion of the theory of film.
How did
you decide where to place music at during the movie?
"Usually the director determines where the music cues will
be. This means that the director decides which scenes will require
music and where in a scene the music will start and end. He
would make suggestions about the placement of music cues, but
usually the director makes the majority of the decisions."
Ever have
composer's block?
"I sometime have problems but I usually ideas come quite
quickly."
What sort
of background do you have and how did you break into being a
composer?
"I began playing piano when I was eiht years old. Glass
also enjoys composing Operas, I broke into film composition
in 1979 for Koyaanisqatsi. It may have taken several years for
it to make it to the screen."
Does a
film composer need to have perfect pitch?
"No, I don't have perfect pitch. Very few film composers
do. I think it would probably be a nuisance. Everything you
listen to would sound out of tune."
Joel then
talked to Michael Pye the writer of the novel that Taking Lives
is based on
How involved
in the movie adaptation were you?
"I was not involved in the production at all. I am so used
to sitting in my office waiting for something to happen. I will
be seeing the movie tonight for the first time."
Monday
8th March 2004: Taking Lives Update:
Next Monday The first 9 minutes of the Angelina Jolie starring
Taking Lives will premiere on it's official site. The producer
Mark Canton had this to say about the news "We're going
to do the premiere online next week, which we think is a very
strong opportunity to show the college age 18-year-old men and
women the type of velocity and fun they're in for, without exposing
what happens in the movie, because none of the primary cast
is in that. We're very excited about that, and it's a big opportunity
for us in terms of going online this way. We came up with this
idea with Don Buckley, the head of Warner Brothers' internet
division, who is ahead of the curve and they do a terrific job.
We decided we wanted to do something that we thought could expand
the audience that way. You know the competition is always great,
so we wanted to find the broadest possible reach out of the
box."

More info on those pics we posted last week "The pictures were taken right
outside of Angelinas trailer.. it was about 9:45pm when they were done for
the day.. the way we got her to come take pictures and sign autographs was
by screaming her name when she was walking tired looking off the set. She
said very nicely I'll come sign some autographs but i have to go put my
baby to bed .The security guard told me they are going to be in Montreal
mostly all summer in different locations. So I would think at this time
that they are done in Quebec City. " Thanks to Keri!

parts of the filming for taking lives and the funny thing is it was like
right outside of my hotel room and i asked a crew worker if there were any
famous people in the movie and when it was going to be released and they
said that there weren't any famous people and that it was going to probably
be released august 2004 or next summer" Naturally Ethan Hawke and Angelina
Jolie were in attendance which Lulu found out later!

Tuesday 10th June 2003: Taking Lives Update:
Just received another update on the webcam that was covering the Taking Lives filming " I just noticed that the "wrong time" displayed in the camera feed is actually the time (and date) at which they **stopped** the feed. So not only the bridge is "heavily guarded" by police at both ends (and the bridge is about 1km long, so you can't peek at the filming just by being close to the bridge), but they also turned off the governement traffic cameras. That's definitely not good..." Thanks to Emmanuel Giasson!
Monday 9th June 2003: Taking Lives Update:
Just received an update on the Taking Lives filming "I guess that blocking bridges in Montreal was too costly, or simply out of question, so they moved where I live, in Quebec City, from the 7th to 15th of June, to block one of the two bridges crossing the river on weekends and during business hour on weekdays. There's web-cams on the bridge, so we might acutaly see something
sometimes... but it's not real-time and it,s refreshed only every minute or
so... (and for some reason, time isn't correct on those two cams). Anyway,
simply follow this link:and click on the cams on the eastmost bridge (the ever-in-painting-progress rusty one), just above and below "Pont de Québec"." Thanks to Emmanuel Giasson!
Monday 9th June 2003: Taking Lives Update:
Just received word that Taking Lives has been filming in Quebec City at the Old Bridge (Pont de Québec this weekend.
