The release date for The Order has been set as September 5th 2003 in the US.

Wednesday 1st January 2003: The Sin Eater (The Order) Update:
Brian Heglehand's The Sin Eater has had its release put back because some of the effects featured in the movie have proven to be unintentionally funny. The film, now apparently re-titled The Order, was to be released on January 17th, but now it looks like it won't see the light of day until the late summer. Variety reports that the effects, originally handled by Mill Film in London, are now being done by Santa Monica-based Asylum.

The film depicts sins flying out of the human body. Post-production insiders who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the problem was that Mill's "Sin Eater" effects were producing hilarity instead of fear. One insider described the exiting sins as "looking like calamari".

The Sin Eater, or The Order as it is now, reunites Heglehand with his 'A Knight's Tale' star Heath Ledger, and is released by Twentieth Century Fox.

Caltanet Cinema have scored a series of images of the sets being constructed for Brian Heglehand's The Sin Eater in St. Peter's Basilica. Apparently shooting will end on March 22nd. Go here to see the pics.

Not a great deal of information on this yet but the word is that Heath Ledger is on board this project in the lead role. He will join his Knights Tale director Brian Helgehand.

The film has been compared to The Exorcist and The Omen and The Stax Report reviewed a very early of the script dated August 1997.

"Obviously, the draft I read is quite old now and there will have been changes made to it by the time filming begins. Please bear that in mind while reading this report. The Sin Eater is a supernatural thriller that follows disillusioned Roman Catholic priest and academic Fr. Alex Bernier (Ledger) as he investigates the strange death of the French ambassador in New York. Was his death a murder or a suicide? Odd marks on the decedent's body hint at a possible connection to the occult so Detective Lucy Sinclair of the NYPD brings in her estranged friend Alex for help. There is a suggestion of a past romance (or at least a yearning for one) between them but that's all I'll say about that. Alex and Lucy end up conducting parallel investigations that take them to Rome and Paris".

"Alex rightly suspects that the ambassador's death is the work of the fabled "Sin Eater," an excommunicated priest named William Eden who works outside of the Church in order to take away the sins of those who want to die. Think of Eden as a cross between Dr. Kevorkian and Father Merrin from The Exorcist (but saddled with the world's most bizarre eating disorder). The following bit can be considered a fairly big spoiler, so [vist FilmForce] to read it".

The film was originally intended to be a vehicle for Antonio Banderas, but he jumped ship back in 1999. Now that the film is under Helgehand's control, not only is Heath Ledger in that role, but the director wants to bring in his fellow Knight's Tale star Paul Bettany too.

Word is that The Sin Eater will shoot in Prague which will double up for Rome. It's rumoured to begin shooting in the Spring of this year for a 2003 release.
