14th August 2003: Wave Update:
As we reported on this site a few months ago, singer Jewel is
to follow up
her acting debut in Ride With the Devil by starring in Wave,
an independent
film project she is developing and producing alongside Goldie
Hawn's
Clearlight Productions. Written by David Rothmiller, the project
is about a
mother reconnecting with her adult son after spending time in
jail for a
crime of passion committed when he was a child. Jewel will take
on the
strong supporting role of the son's girlfriend.

Friday
1st August 2003: Wave Update:
The writer of Wave, David Rothmiller has just been
in touch with an update on the project " Jewel's still
in negotiations with Goldie Hawn's Cosmic Entertainment to produce.
She's talked about it in the press, so it's not hush-hush. Goldie
may direct, nothing sure yet. Film's about the difficulties
in a mother/son relationship when the mother is released from
prison. Takes place on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest.
I've signed on to rewrite the project"
Thursday
3rd July 2003: Wave Update:
Having
made an impressive debut in Ang Lees Ride With the Devil,
singer and poet Jewel is looking to expand her acting CV. She
acquired a script last year called Wave, an ensemble piece which
centres on the reunion of a mother
and her estranged son in a small island town. "It's a pretty
serious film, but it's written well," she said. "It's
pretty lighthearted [and] at the same time, it tackles some very
serious subjects. It's about a young male character's relationship
with his mom. [She] went to jail to protect him
from his father, and when she gets out, their relationship unfolds.
He realises that things weren't quite as they seemed, and it's
about them working their relationship out." Jewel plans to
play the male character's girlfriend, and she said her production
company is currently talking to
Goldie Hawn about directing the flick. "We're trying to get
the deal made," she added. "It's really a much different
kind of business. It takes a lot of time to get things done."
The singer envisions the mother's role being played by a Shirley
MacLaine-type. As for the male lead, she said she's
pretty torn about the casting. "There's a lot of great mysterious
brooding young actors right now."
