Zen: Intergalactic Ninja is a comic book character created by Steve Stern and dan Cote that has what I can only describe as a weird premise. Zen tells the story of an alien martial artist who is sent to Earth to prevent its destruction by a galactic madman. Could this movie only be a comedy?

Steve Stern has been trying to get a movie made out of his character since at least 1993 with none of the attempts bearing fruit. First thought to be attached to the project was director Brian Yuzna. Yuzna had this to say about the project "What separates Zen from other movie aliens is that he's a hero. Aliens have gotten a lot of bad press lately, but Zen should help turn that around."

They finsihed off a script for producers Cine-Groupe, things got delayed however when Yuzna was linked with another project, but Stern was still talking up his Zen project "Hollywood being what it is, we continue to experience delays. I can't at this point say precisely when Zen will lens -- it may have to be after Brian has completed Faust. Then again, it may happen within as little as a month or two. It's impossible for a mere mortal such as myself to tell."

Word then came in that it had a new production company of Eight Celestials teamed up with Shanghai Film Studio. A budget was set of around $6 million dollars and the movie was being planned to be made in China, but English spoken.

To try and drum up some more interest in the project Stern has been trying to use a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon angle on the project "I had always wanted to set the Zen movie in Asia, the decision to do this had baffled filmmakers in the past. However the success of Tiger/Dragon has now made that idea chic. And also the Zen movie is going to have wire work "Oh yes, you have an ultimate, alien martial artist .. feats that even go way beyond what was depicted in Tiger/Dragon. I would say that the martial arts wire work is absolutely essential to this movie."

No casting has been announced yet but Stern indicated that "They're looking at the highest profile, young, Chinese actresses who are versed in martial arts." No director has been attached yet either.
