Graysmith's 1986 "Zodiac" and the sequel, "Zodiac Unmasked: The
Identity of American's Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed," The books are
based on a serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco area from 1966 to 1978.
The killer committed at least 37 murders and documented his exploits in taunting
letters sent to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Premise/Synopsis : Gyllenhaal will portray Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist who began tracking the mystery of the serial killer. The Zodiac terrorized the San Francisco area from 1966-78, committing at least 37 murders and documenting his exploits in taunting letters sent to the Chronicle. Graysmith believed he identified the killer but competing investigations and other issues prevented the suspect, who died in 1992, from ever being apprehended. Ruffalo will portray the lead investigator in the case, and Downey will play a reporter.

Fincher has signed up Gary Oldman to co-star
in Zodiac as the attorney Melvin Belli, the
San Francisco-based "King of Torts,"
received a letter from the Zodiac in 1969 in
which the killer wished the attorney a Merry
Christmas and said he hoped to retain enough
self-control not to claim a ninth and 10th victim.

Signed up to star are Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhall and Anthony Edwards. Filming will start this September and will be based on the story of the Zodiac killer who went on the rampage in L.A. in the 60's

"Zodiac," the Paramount and Warner
Bros. co-production to be directed by David
Fincher. Screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt is adapting
from Robert Graysmith's 1986 true-crime book
"Zodiac" and 2002 sequel "Zodiac
Unmasked: The Identity of America's Most Elusive
Serial Killer Revealed." Gyllenhaal will
portray Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle
cartoonist who began tracking the mystery of
the serial killer. The Zodiac terrorized the
San Francisco area from 1966-78, committing
at least 37 murders and documenting his exploits
in taunting letters sent to the Chronicle. Graysmith
believed he identified the killer but competing
investigations and other issues prevented the

talks to co-finance "Zodiac," a thriller describing
the obsessive efforts of three people who sought to bring
the infamous Zodiac killer to justice and the strain it caused
in their personal lives. Thirty-seven people were murdered
by the serial killer in the San Francisco area from 1966-78.
David Fincher is in negotiations to direct the feature. "Zodiac"
is adapted by screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt (Basic) from Robert
Graysmith's 1986 true-crime tome "Zodiac" and its
2002 sequel, "Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America's
Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed."
