MADtv
proudly states that they are number two in sketch comedy. They
understand that there will be an obvious comparison with Saturday
Night Live and they embrace it with humor, just like everything
else on the show. Even though this comparison will be made MADtv
has long since proven that it can stand on its own despite the
competition. The show has been going for ten years now, and
this special edition collection features some of the more popular
skits from seasons eight through ten.
The way that the
Saturday Night Live DVDs are set up usually focuses on specific
actors, but there is a lot to be said for the MADtv approach.
There is a wide variety of skits, featuring some of the more
popular characters as well as the skits that are just extremely
funny. Everyone that watches the show knows Michael McDonald’s
portrayal of the infamous Stuart, the young boy who loves cookies
and hates to wear pants. There are a number of skits with this
character on the DVD. Other favorites include Ms. Swan in a
candy store, Coach Hines as the angry gym teacher, Dot at a
spelling bee, and plenty of Oprah fat jokes.
The DVD is set up
with the seasons split up, or you can choose to watch all of
them together. There is almost three hours of skits on the DVD,
and the greatest thing about the way they are set up is that
they are titled as you watch. This way you know what skit you
are about to watch. The reason that the DVD claims to be special
edition must be because of the one special feature, which is
Stuart bloopers. There is also a commentary track by Michael
McDonald on the bloopers. The bloopers mostly just show the
other cast members beginning to laugh at his actions.
