Beyond The Stars DVD Review:

Beyond the Stars proudly stars Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, and Sharon Stone, all of which do as good of a job as possible. The question to be
asked is why not only one, or even two actors though that this script would be a good idea, but three. It is unfortunate to see such talent wasted, but that is exactly what happens in this odd, confused story about a boy and the moon.

When young ambitious Eric (Slater) accidentally puts a rocket through a school window, it is thought best that he spend the summer with his father,
who he doesn’t have a great relationship with. Eric is a good kid though, and he just wants to know as much as he can in order to be an astronaut some
day. Soon he realizes that Paul Andrew, a former astronaut, lives near his father, and he sets out to befriend him. Unfortunately, Paul Andrews, played
by Sheen, has become a bitter and grumpy alcoholic.

In a predictable plot Eric manages to warm his heart, and work though all of the bitterness, soon
giving them a relationship which Eric’s father is slightly jealous of. No worries though, because things work out well, as they only can in cornball
films such as these.

Beyond the Stars was written and directed by David Saperstein, who also created Cocoon, a far superior film. It becomes apparent that he is using
some common themes near the very end, when the film goes in a direction that makes almost no sense for the type of film that you may have thought you
were watching. There was really no way that the film could have been saved from being bad, but it then takes a quick turn away from being safe, into
another genre entirely.

Aside from interactive menus, this DVD is empty. It offers absolutely nothing, which is sad only because it would be interesting to see what the
actors were thinking when they made this film.
