Blood: Last Vampire DVD Review:

The Movie

Vampires are real and Saya knows it. Since she is the last of the pure blooded, and she has vowed her unlife to destroying the unpure monsters that have spawned from her race. This night, her latest targets have infiltrated an United States military base. Can she locate her prey and eliminate them before more innocent lives are taken?

I have to admit, this film is a guilty pleasure. Since the film has a 45 minute run time, things like character development and a well developed plot have been sacrificed so we can watch a young woman chase vampires around with a bad ass sword. But really, this isn't a film you want to see for plot, this is a film to watch for its beautiful animation. The colors are beautiful and the lighting is excellent, if they weren't the film just wouldn't work, especially since the film primarily takes place during the evening and night time.

The voice acting is decent and has an interesting twist. There is no English overdub for this film because the film is dual language. Japanese characters speak Japanese while Americans speak English. This is handled extremely well, in fact Youki Kudoh's Saya is perfectly voiced and blends the English and Japanese languages extremely well.

True, this film will never be thought of as a classic although it may gain cult status because it is being billed as "Japan's first fully digital animated feature." I just think it's a film with too much style and not enough substance. Rent it first.

The Video

A very beautiful transfer. The colors are extraordinary as is the shadowing. I have absolutely no complaints.

The Audio

Nothing special, Dolby 2.0 Surround and 5.1. Sounds good, but that's about it.

The Extras

These are the extras:

"The Making of Blood", Japanese Trailer, & Image Gallery

The extra features are anemic. I found the 20 minute documentary pretty much worthless, the trailer decent, and the image gallery unremarkable.

All in all, nothing to look at.

Overall, the film is enjoyable. Short, but enjoyable. Take an hour out of your busy life, rent the flick, and knock yourself out. It's a nice 45 minute ride.
