Bound
DVD Review:
The Movie
Bound
is smart, sexy in style, and doesn't shy away from showing
sex the way it really is. I've heard of this movie years before,
but I never got around to see it. Damn, am I glad I did. Why?
It's simple: Bound rules.
It's an
engaging movie that takes twists and turns here and there,
but also manages to realistically convey a love relationship
one might never thought of accepting, well, simply because
one didn't know much about it. Bound isn't here to change
your perception, but it's here to make you more aware, if
you like it or not. It's not just a movie about lesbian sex,
no, oh no, it's much more!
Corky
(Gershon), a lesbian ex con hired to work in an apartment
as a plumber, meets neighbors Caesar (Pantoliano), who launders
money for the Mafia, and his girlfriend Violet (Tilly). The
two women have a love affair and decide to steal $2,000,000
that Caesar has in custody before he gives them back to Mafia
boss Gino Marzone. Things start to go wrong and Bound kicks
into high gear.
This description
doesn't do the movie any justice, so instead of reading this
crap about what the story is, just go rent the movie!!!
The movie's
working title was The Business. That has got to be one of
the most generic titles I've heard in a very long time, along
with The Assignment. "Shiver me timbers, Phillip."
Anyhow,
this DVD version of Bound is the unrated cut. It's one minute
longer than the R-rated version.

The Video
Considering
the visual style of the post-Matrix Wachowski Bros. in this
movie, the video quality adds to the existent voyeuristic
shooting style. Some darker scenes will come though a little
fuzzy, but when color appears anywhere, it just lights up
the entire screen. The two most common colors, red and white,
are used perfectly in the movie and on this DVD are enhanced
even more. This is an over-the-top standard quality.

The Audio
This is
what movies should sound like. Here, the sound takes over
all of your speakers and extracts every important sound (such
as exploding bullets) that the Wachowski Bros. used to enhance
the visuals and make the experience of the story even more
glorifying.

The Extras
Man, the
real treat of this DVD is the audio commentary by Andy Wachowski,
Larry Wachowski, Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano
and Sussie Bright (she is an expert on Lesbian Affairs and
was the movie's ?).
The Audio
Commentary
If you
were among those disappointed by the lack of commentary talent
on The Matrix DVD, well, all of you can rejoice because this
one makes up for it. It's funny, engaging, (very) informative,
and draws you in so much that you don't even want to answer
the phone (should it, in fact, start ringing).
It starts
off rather nicely with the Wachowski Bros. and Sussie Bright
discussing the movie. Roughly about an hour into the commentary,
they are joined by Jennifer Tilly. Tilly almost takes over
the commentary as her comments make you laugh... and even
appreciate her screen presence all-around (not just in this
movie). She is fun to listen, let me tell you. Gina Gershon
comes in later to speak her mind, but her comments aren't
quite as engaging and informative. And after her, Joey Pants
(how the Wachowski's refer to him) drops in to give his thoughts.
He doesn't talk much, but when he does, you better listen
closely, because what he says is what I consider golden silence.
According
to the commentary, there were some issues the MPAA did not
like, but since the DVD format is known to sometimes include
raw footage, well, this will be your fix. No, the sex in this
movie is not porn-related, but rather a truthful depiction
of sex (according to Sussie Bright).
Overall,
this commentary is worth the DVD alone. It makes you appreciate
the movie more and even takes you some behind the scenes secrets,
although once or twice, the Wachowski's opted not to reveal
aspects.
Theatrical
trailer(s)
Pretty
standard stuff. A nice addition, however.
It would've
been cool to see or know if maybe there were some deleted
scenes. Another cool addition would've been to include the
screenplay, but then again, it's on the internet already,
so why bother, eh!?
The reason
I give this an 8, well, you will most likely agree with me
once you've experienced this DVD.

Overall,
this is one kick-ass DVD. Surely, there aren't any other bonus
features, but commentary offers so much insight, you don't
need anything else.
