The Bridge Over The River Kwai DVD Review:

They don't make movies like they used to. That's not a bad thing. I enjoy today's directing styles very much. It's just that when David Lean made The Bridge On The River Kwai in 1957, he didn't have access to CGI or computer editing. Instead, David Lean relied on what he could do: creative camera work, beautiful landscape sweeps, and some of the most simple yet effective
shots.

The Movie

The Bridge on the River Kwai is the story of a British captain and his troops captured by the Japanese during World War II. The Japanese force the captured soldiers to construct a bridge across the river Kwai (yes, its all
coming together now), but, Col. Nicholson, played by Alec Guinness, refuses to work and refuses to let his officers work citing the Geneva Convention.

The Geneva Convention (rules of war) states that officers are not to be used as laborers, but the stubborn Japanese Col. Saiutu (Sessue Hayakawa) forces him.

What we get is a mental battle between two powerful men. Saiutu tortures Nicholson but he doesn't give in. They then reach an agreement, instead of working on the bridge, Nicholson will be the supervisor.

Meanwhile, the British government has been alerted about the bridge and will stop at nothing to see it destroyed. They send out a team of soldiers to
blow it up.

The ending to this movie is intense and leaves some questions about where Nicholson's values lied, with his troops or with the bride he became obsessed with and did not want to see blown up.

Bridge is one of my favorite movies and contains some of the finest acting I've ever seen, especially Alec Guinness. A perfect film.

The Video

When I first watched this movie, it was on an old video tape. When I saw this transfer I was pleasantly surprised. Great job in the video department. There are a bit of scratches and artifacts but not too bad.

The Extras

Nice. This film got what it deserved.

Documentary
One of the best documentaries ever on a DVD. About an hour long. They explain the process of the writing, making-of, releasing, amusing stories and everything you could need to know.

Rise and Fall of the Jungle Giant
About the bridge they built and destroyed. Pretty cool.

USC short film
Eh. Pretty boring. About 5 mins.

Appreciation by John Milius
This is pretty cool. But they could have gotten someone more important in the film world.

Photo Galleries
Nice!

Trailers
These are so awesome. They are so different from today's trailers. They give away the whole movie, but I like them nevertheless. There is one for Bridge and some for other David Lean movies.

DVD ROM Stuff
Games, posters and a screensaver. AWESOME!

Packaging
I don't really review this, but this package is so damn cool. Seriously. Really classy
