Charmed: The Complete Season One DVD Review:

It’s
difficult to figure out what age range the television show Charmed
was meant for when it began. A show about three sisters who
suddenly find out that they are good witches and have special
powers which are to be used for noble causes, it seems obvious
that a female audience would be more apt to watch the show,
but as the sisters deal with relationship issues including sleeping
with a man on the first date, it is unclear what age-group of
females the show was meant for. It may seem obvious that the
show is for older females because of the sex within the plot,
and yet many of the scenes involving witchcraft are at such
a B-quality that it is difficult to imagine anyone past puberty
getting excited to watch the hour-long fantasy/drama each week.
Giving new career
opportunities to slightly faded stars Shannen Doherty and Alyssa
Milano, Charmed did catch on, however big of a mystery it may
be. Quickly there was a routine formed in each episode. There
was always some dark power that had to be stopped, usually using
all of the three sister’s individual powers. Oldest sister
Prue has the power to move objects with her mind. In other words,
telekinesis, although they don’t refer to it as that,
because that may make it seem less magical. The middle sister,
and most convincingly played by Holly Marie Combs, can freeze
time. Her name is Piper and the youngest sister is Phoebe, who
has the ability to see the future. It is no coincidence that
all three sisters have names that begin with “p”
and that is one of the many cute details that either make or
break the show, depending on your opinion.
Most of the episodes,
even when able to pull off convincing stories, ruin the mood
with horrible special effects which look as though they were
done in someone’s basement in about fifteen minutes. The
only exception is the time-freezing special effects, which are
bearable.
Aside from having
their own special powers, the sisters also have a book, which
offers them spells and suggestions in their darkest times. This
helps to add more magical elements to some episodes, which is
often the only thing separating one episode from the next. The
formula is so well developed that they never seem willing to
stretch out of it too much, which hurts the series in the long
run.
The DVD is void
of special features, as many T.V. series seem to be lately.
This is not disappointing to me as I am not a fan, but it seems
that for those who are fans they could have put something together.
It isn’t as if the show is that old, or the actors are
no longer around.
