Chronicle of the Raven DVD Review:
Chronicle of the Raven
Twins.
Curses. Deception. Murder. Chronicle of the Raven has all of
the makings of a bad soap opera (I’m aware of the redundancy
in that statement). Part horror, part drama, this film takes
place in a short period of time, chronicling Jennifer Cassi
as she takes a journey to Buenos Aires to sell the estate of
her recently deceased twin sister. The home is still inhabited
by relatives, including her spry grandmother (Faye Dunaway).
Jennifer soon becomes aware of a force within the house that
is killing everyone in the family except for her grandmother,
who is conveniently well. Jennifer finds herself in danger of
the same fate as her sister.
Unless you have
an innate fear of ravens pecking you to death, Chronicle of
the Raven is likely to be more disgusting and boring than scary.
Every time Jennifer falls asleep she is visited by ravens which
peck at her internal organs, which is the entire cause for the
R rating and horror title given to the film. If only it weren’t
so incredibly boring. It is the same conspiracy theory voodoo
story which has been done dozens of times before, especially
since the success of Rosemary’s Baby, but it isn’t
done well. Nothing about the film is entertaining or light,
leaving only a dark cloud of a bad plot.
The performances
aren’t bad but there isn’t much to mess up. Most
scenes are void of dialogue, filled with mundane acts of searching
through books or preparing for bed. It is almost as if tension
is supposed to be built by these actions, when really it just
leaves one’s finger poised on the fast-forward button.
The DVD received
the exact treatment that it deserved, with poor visuals, and
merely decent sound, not to mention the menu screen. About the
only which doesn’t fit is the fact that there is audio
commentary by Gina Phillips and Faye Dunaway. It is the only
special feature, but it is a big one. The only problem is that
I can’t imagine that many people other than fans of the
two actresses would ever bother listening to the discussion
about the poor film.
