Clueless: Whatever Edition DVD Review:

Clueless is a snapshot of pop culture in the nineties, which is what made it so hip and entertaining upon its release in 1995, but this is what also makes it just as entertaining ten years later. Watching Clueless has the effect that looking at an old photo album or high school year book might have. It is a reminder of how things were, but done in such an extreme way that it is difficult not to laugh at the hip-ness of it. The funniest thing about Clueless is that despite the pop culture elements, the story is taken from Emma, a story which takes place in the eighteen hundreds.

In her breakout role, Alicia Silverstone plays Cher, a matchmaking 15-year old Beverly Hills high school student obsessed with fashion. When matching outfits and arguing with her ex step-brother (Paul Rudd) gets old for Cher , she decides to take a few charity cases. Cher plays matchmaker for her debate teacher in order to get a better grade and gives a makeover to a new fashion challenged student (Brittany Murphy). At the same time Cher is looking for love for herself, preferably outside of the high school, until she meets her dream man, who has other interests.

Part romance but mostly comedy, Clueless is a fun filled blast from the past, but luckily not one we must be ashamed of. It is still an entertaining film and it has been done over for the 10 th anniversary special edition package. The cover art is a plethora of pink with just a touch of diamond trim. A cardboard slip cover has no real use, but it certainly does make the package more “special”.

Although all of the short featurettes which make up the special features could have been combined to make an hour long documentary, instead the information is sorted and split up into seven featurettes, most of which are less than ten minutes. The Class of '95 takes a look at the cast and the process it took to find each of them. Creative Writing is a short featurette about the very first steps of the film's journey, beginning with Amy Heckerling's adaptation of Emma. Fashion 101 goes into detail about the fashion of each character and the trends that were set in the nineties. Language Arts focuses on all of the new vernacular created by Clueless. “Suck ‘N Blow”- A Tutorial and Driver's Ed both take a look at specific scenes within the film and the mishaps involved with shooting them. We're History is just a few more stories from the cast about the shoot. As well as these featurettes, there are also two theatrical trailers.

The menu is set up like a vanity table with scenes from the film playing above the make-up and other suitable items. Although it is somewhat cartoonish, it is also quite fitting for the film. The film is shown in Widescreen enhanced for 16:9 TVs and has optional English and Spanish subtitles.
