DVD Review:

This film is very much a one-star film, that being Nicolas Cage who plays Tom Welles, a low life personal dectective who spends his time doing run of the mill whos cheating on who cases with very little danger. Then the man receieves a taope that turns Welles' life around and sends him into the dark side of the pornograhic underworld, this is his supposed big break

From here on Schumacher follows Welles as he persues this case uncovering very graphic and dramatic eveidence in search of the truth of what happened to the girl captuared on film. Aided by a grand performance by supporting actor Jaoquin Phoenix who plays an adult toy store clerk called Max, Welles plows deeper into the dire filth.

All this with good acting and precise directing makes 8MM a very good film to watch, however, with the subject matter it covers, it is not everyones cup of tea and some people may find it downright disgusting. That said fine performances from Phoenix & Cage along with excellent direction skills from Schumacher mean that this film is well worth a watch if you can stomach it.

Audio & Visual:
Presented in anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1, the dark and shadowy scenes in the movie are transferred well to DVD while focus remains sharp. As with most high-budget modern films, the picture quality is impecable. Audio wise, 8MM comes with a fine mix on the Dolby 5.1, not too agreesive, but clean, smooth and clear.

Extras:
The additional features on the disc are an audio commentary with director Joel Schumacher, a Making-of featurette, cast and crew biographies, production notes, and a theatrical trailer. The commentary track is pretty interesting and informative. Schumacher spends much of his time discussing the background for the world depicted in the movie and on his own experiences. The remaining extras aren't so compelling. The trailer and biographies are very basic, and not that interesting. The featurette was informative though and worth watching.

Overall:
3.5/5 - Very good film, a little disgusting in places, but a very good film should be able to stand the content.
