Law and Order - The Fourteenth Season DVD Review:

Law and Order broke all of the rules when it first started airing in 1990, taking the success of the cop genre and mixing it with the equally popular
lawyer genre. What resulted was an hour long drama which followed a crime from the investigation through the trial. Now going into its fifteenth
season, the original Law and Order series just released season fourteen on DVD. Although there have been some complaints about the fact that this DVD has been released out of order, skipping from season two to fourteen without releasing any in between, this is no reason why the fourteenth season is any less worth buying.

Law & Order, created and executive produced by Dick Wolf, has been renewed through 2005, which will make it the longest running police series and
second longest running drama series in the history of television. On top of that it also holds the record for most consecutive best series nominations,
only tying with M.A.S.H. and Cheers.

Law and Order features an incredible ensemble cast, and although few of the original actors are still remaining, the show has still managed to stay
consistent since it began in 1990. The detectives are Jerry Orbach and Jesse L. Martin, and S. Epatha Merkerson is their Lieutenant, who took over for Chris Noth, Paul Sorvino and Dann Florek in Season two. The legal side is Sam Waterston, Elisabeth Rohm and Fred Thompson as DA Arthur Branch.

Ultimately it isn’t as much the actors as it is the ripped-from-headlines crimes that fuel each season, which also makes it much easier to jump into
each season or episode without needing much background information. That being said, Law and Order seems to have one of the best ensemble casts on television today, only showed up by the writing for the show.

The disc packaging has also improved a great deal, practically jumping out at you from video store displays. Instead of the cardboard case that was
used for previous Law and Order releases, they have switched to a clear plastic cover instead, which is much sleeker. Also included with the
twenty-four episodes from season fourteen is a great deal of extra features, many more than I’ve come to expect from television DVD sets. These features include:

Jesse L. Martin Profile (14:15)
Fred Thompson Profile (6:42)
Set Tour With Jerry Orbach (6:19).
Interview With Forensic Scientist Park Dietz (8:35)
Cast Member Profiles (0:51)

Any fan of the show is sure to appreciate these extras as well as the episodes themselves. Lets just hope the seasons in-between are released in
good time.
