The Man Who Sued God DVD Review:

A famed Comedian worldwide, Scot Billy Connelly
has more recently been trying to branch out into more serious
film roles, indeed has has done so quite successfully in Mrs.
Brown and stars with Tom Cruise in his latest blockbuster The
Last Samuri.
The title suggests a comedy, however, this film is more of a
romance, which tackles the issues in life today, those fathers
who are seperated from their children and anyone who has been
told their insurance policy was invalid due to an "act
of God" will relate immediately.
The film, based in Billy's favoured Australia, Steve Myers (Connelly)
is a disgruntled lawyer, turned fisherman who loses his boat,
with the insurance company refusing to pay out and invoking
the act of God clause. He brings himself back to his Lawyer
roots and takes on the might of the Insurance company, trying
to prove that the "Act of God" clause is a farce,
and just a scam by Insurance companies to avoid paying out.
He gains much support from the public along the way.
With his new found public profile he crosses paths with journalist
Anna Redmond (Davis) who is itching to get back to real journalism
and reporting rather than writing gossip columns. At first Myers
rejects this publicity, but Redmond is determined and goes as
far as to loose her job just to keep the story.
Both Connelly and Davis put in competent performances as the
leads in the movie, and it is rich in romantic value, but less
so in the comedy stakes. However considering the subject matter,
much of the screenplay is generic, with the big insurance company
playing dirty to cost Redmond her job, and the biggest cliche
of all, Redmond and Conolly get it together at the end.
A good and touching film which is amusing in places, but is
overtly generic in its storyline.
Extras:
None, unusual for a modern DVD, we might as well have viewed
it on VHS!
Audio & Visual:
5.1 Dolby Surround sound used to full effect for a film of this
nature, very good and very well done in places. Anamorphic Enhancement
does the Visual aspect some favours, but still doesn't cover
up the fact that this film is obviously quite low-moderate budget
in its making, a fact backed up by the lack of extras on this
package.
Overall:
2.5/5 - Good Film, with obvious low budget Picture and Sound
quality from a relatively un-established house of film. Touching
but Generic. Disappointly, no extras.
